It has to have a valid digital input to lock onto. Are you feeding it a digital input, at 44.1k to 96k, in PCM mode?

Seconded - feed the Alesis the output from a phono pre-amp, or the 'tape out' RCAs from your amplifier or receiver.

To delete a Track from a playlist, you must currently have that Track selected in the display. Pressing the DEL TRACK button will cause a confirm delete page to be displayed, where "Song 01" is the name of the Track to be deleted. Pressing UP/YES will remove that Track from the playlist, moving the next Track in the playlist in its place. Pressing DOWN/NO will cancel the operation and return the unit to its previous state.

NOTE: Deleting a Track from a playlist does not delete the audio samples from the hard disk. The audio remains on the disk in an "Audio File"

Disc failure while to burn a CD on the Alesis Masterlink ML-9600

The Alesis fitted with a standard computer CD drive, there's an online list somewhere of compatible drives. Take the lid off, unscrew the current drive, and replace. It sounds like the drive is faulty. Online instructions all over the place on how to replace these drives in PCs - it's no different in the Alesis

Digital input cable optical

The Alesis doesn't have an optical input.

It will only receive digital input in PCM, at the sample rates shown on the front panel - 44.1k to 96k

If you're trying to feed it an encoded Dolby Digital, or similar Home Theatre-type signal, it will not work, as these are not PCM-encoded signals.

There must be some error message when you try to write a CD. What happens when you press the 'create CD' button?

Regarding the other issue, you must have a valid digital input connected for the Alesis to lock on to. PCM digital at one of the sample rates specified on the front panel. If you try to feed it a non-PCM digital signal, such as Dolby Stereo, some other Home Theatre format, or other, it will not accept it. Must be 16-bit or 24-bit, 44.1 to 96kHz as per front panel.

You will need a phono preamp or use the tape out from a receiver/amp.
