Question about Craftsman 8.50 Torque Rating Rear Tine Tiller

Open Question

Tiller won't move

Tines will engage and work, shift lever works freely when not running and am able to get it F and R, but will now move. When in neutral I can move it bout 4 rotations of the tire forward and then it locks up-- can then do the same going backwards and same happens. belt is tight just wont move. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

SOURCE: Own a "Craftsman Rear Tine

Hi,
Can you move the tines by hand???
They should turn by hand if you try to move them...if not then they are bound up by something...
either a bearing has gone bad, something has wrapped around them, or there is something stuck in there that will not let them turn...check for a rock stuck between one of the tines and the housing around them...

Get the tines moving freely and you will be okay again...

Yes, there are shear pins on the tines and on the wheels. Can you check to see if the belt actually moves when the pulleys turn?

The way to move without the motor running...

1.on each wheel pull pin in center of hub
2.push wheel closer to motor.
3.put pin back in to axle but not though hub
4.do the same steps to other wheel
now you can push tiller

Troy bilt horse pto clutch will not disengage

The problem is lack of lubrication in the pto coupling. Losen the two swing bolts carefuly, block the front under the motor. Separate the tine transmision from the housing and grease both sides with as much grease as you can work in. Work the lever as you do this. Should fix the problem.

the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft
