Replaced phase and speed control board and mixer still doesn't work! Bad words are flying around here tonight!

Michelle,

Have you taken the brushes out of the mixer at any point? I see quite often people remove the brushes, and then they are inserted incorrectly when put back in, the brushes will fit in in any direction, but there is only one way to put the brushes in properly.

when you look at the brush, the carbon portion is square with one side cut off, the brush holder inside the mixer is shapped the same way. use a flash light to match up the brush, after installed correctly the mixer should turn on and function correctly.

If it does not then you should call into us, when around your mixer and we can do more trouble shooting over the phone.

Thank you,

My KitchenAid KSM90 will not turn on at all.

First make sure that the mixer is plugged into a working outlet. Were there any symptoms the last time you used your mixer? Check the cord on the mixer for damage. If the cord shows any wear replace it immediately.

At any point in time have you removed the brushes or adjust the speed control plate? After checking the cord, remove the brushes from the mixer, check to see if they are pitted, if they are replace the brushes. Please pay extra attention when putting the brushes back in the mixer, there is a dog-eared side of the brush, match this up to the brush holder to make sure the brush is inserted correctly.

If the brushes are not the problem check the speed control plate. If you remove the end cover from the mixer you can gain direct access to the speed control plate. There are 3 screws on this plate, the top two are used to adjust the speed of the mixer, the bottom one spaces the on/off switch contact. Try adjust the bottom screw to see if the mixer will turn on, it is possible the on/off switch was out of place.

Try these first, if none of this works let me know and we can continue trouble shooting.

Mixer on my Sunbeam Model MX5900 compact mixmaster has burned out because beaters kept jambing in each other. Can I purchase just the mixer and beaters? Stand and bowl are OK

If the motors had burnt out then the winding can be redone if you can get this job to a winding shop.
Other wise the motor and assmebly can be ordered from a Sunbeam service outlet. try and see if you re able to source a motor assembly from a damaged/scrapped set with a mechanical defect.

I have a KitchenAid mixer Model K5SS, Ser #W83808959. The motor stopped running and in checking the brushes, I found they are are both stuck in the brush holders. I suspect this is the reason the motor...

Download a Copy of the Kitchenaid Service manual.

You may have to remove the Motor Housing and use a small screwdiver
to completely remove the brushes or all portions of them if they are broken.

Won't turn on after first use. 1801 220 watts hand mixer looks like 2562 250 watt mixer

It seems that the mixer is overheating and tripping the thermostat thus preventing further use. I would recommend a thorough overhaul. You will need to carefully inspect all the components, particularly Items the brush assemblies, and the commutator portion of the armature (where the brushes touch the armature), and everywhere else in the motor compartment. Any parts exposed to oil will need to be degreased and dried before reassembly. When you reassemble your mixer, the brushes can only be installed one way. Make sure the brush's concave contact face is resting completely on the armature. If it is turned it 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly and the motor will not get any juice.
While your mixer's apart you should check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. You may find more things that need fixing, adjustment or replacement.
You may find it easier to replace the brushes than degreasing them. I recommend using a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I've seen automotive bearing grease used too - your call). If you feel this is beyond your capabilities and will be too difficult to do by yourself you can take your mixer to a local small appliance repair shop and have them troubleshoot and fix your mixer.

I have a problem with my kitchenaid mixer (latest mixer) I changed the worm gear but I broke the control plate when I was replacing the worm gear So, I bought the part and changed it, but the mixer...

The Service Manual covering mixers with the control plate can be downloaded at:

http://www.kitchenaidparts.eu/documents/pdf/service-manual/classic-svc-manual-new-email-version.pdf

Things to consider:

The brushes have a chamfer on one edge and must be oriented so that the chamfer can pass a small stop in one corner of the brush sleeve.

Are all the wires to the control board connected correctly? The board is marked for the wires colors.

There are instructions in the manual for measuring the stator coils to find out if they are OK or not.

Checking out the armature is another whole thing and you can get information on-line about this (try searching "armature testing"). I really hope that you don't need to go this far.

Replacing the brush

Hi DENAULTR, this is a repeat of my previous answer to your problem. It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this manual), and select the first file KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model. Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled ?Motor And Control Parts?, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer?s electrical components, along with all the part names and numbers. Locate Illus No 47, Brush holder assembly that includes Illus. Nos. #28, 32, 33, 34, & 46, and Illus. No. 29, Brush & Spring assembly respectively. Make sure you orient each bruch correctly following the illustration here: The Parts List diagrams along with the picture above regarding the orientation of the brushes should get your mixer powered back up and operational. Good luck! I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA If this solution has been helpful to you, please rate it, thanks! -hslincoln

KitchenAid K5sswh mixer after replacing plastic gear-no power

Hi COVINIO. Yes, the "large black spring loaded magnetic screws on the sides of the mixer" are your mixer's brushes, which supplies electricity to the electric motor. (The black cap is the brush cover). I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them, when you replaced your plastic worm gear?
The brushes need to be installed so that they both seat correctly on the armature's commutator. See the illustration below:
cb20d79.jpg
I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the concave contact face rests completely on the armature’s commutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it won’t seat properly and you get no power to the motor.
It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this manual), and select the first file KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus No 47, Brush holder assembly that includes #28, 32, 33, 34 & 46 which is the brush holder insert, and Illus. No. 29, brush & Spring assembly respectively. The illustration along with the picture above regarding the orientation of the brushes should get your mixer powered back up and operational. Good luck! I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

If you look into the brush holder you will see a stopper at the botom ,(this is so when brushes are wore the spring is not driven into armature) .. the brushes have to be inserted so the groove is lined up , try that
