Laptop crashes after installing ram

-   My apple ibook is about 5 years old. A couple of weeks ago it crashed. I was having issues with it freezing up when working on Microsoft Word. A window would pop up instructing me to hold down the power button to force quit. Then again when I was working on ms word it just went black and the fan kept running then I held the power button down to turn it off. When I tried to turn it on again it was just a black screen with the fan running. I can hit caps lock and so forth but noting on the screen. Now I have tried unpluging it using it w/ just the battery w/ the power cord and with out the battery. A month or two ago I upgrade the RAM and so I replaced it with my original RAm and no change. What could it be? What can I do to get it to work again? Thank you for any insight you may have! -   gilly8
