Cannot get beyond Desktop screen frozen

Problem: Notebook will load all the way to the desktop screen - (by looking at the desktop it looks like "My Computer is Highlighted) I cannot click on anything the mouse moves just will not function even if double clicked. Tried: The reset button on bottom of the computer - several times to see if the computer will reset to factory. I have also tried pressing the (red) FN key along with the F1/F11 key as soon as the computer is started up - cannot get into safe mode? / Also tried the "Ctrl" f8. I need help to get this computer functioning does anyone have any solutions as to why this computer just froze and will not function?

Frozen blue screen

Try starting the machine in safe mode: Repeatedly press F8 on startup and choose safe mode from the options window. This only loads the basic drivers so if the problem is with graphics driver for instance, the machine should boot to the desktop. If this is successful, you can uninstall the display driver from device manager: start>control panel>hardware and sound>device manager. Look for display adapters and expand the menu. Right click the adapter and uninstall.
Reboot the machine normally. You can then download and install a new driver.

Once I put in the password the desktop does not

I am going to have you take your Mac into Safe Mode to see if we can't remove a possible folder(s) that may be affecting your Mac's start up function.

Try these steps:

• Reboot your Mac
• Upon restarting your Mac, press the Shift key.
• Hold the Shift key until you see a White Screen with Gray Apple icon and eventually a spinning gear.
• When you see the Spinning gear, release the Shift key.
• Allow the Mac to continue booting up. Also this may take a little while
(NOTE: this may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to load to the Safe mode screen depending on the performance of your Mac, but if it exceeds this time, shutdown your Mac and try just once more. It may have just frozen up the first time around for you.)

• You are going to enter the Safe Mode (which looks like your main desktop environment - the only difference is certain start up items are disabled.)

• Once within the Desktop in Safe Mode
• From the Finder Menu, click Go> Go to Folder
• Type in this line: /System/Library/StartupItems

• This path, is going to take you to the System Library folder which has all of your Mac OS X Startupitems.

• Remove all of those folders to the Trash.

*Reboot your Mac normally and see if you can access your normal User desktop environment.

Let me know if this helps.

Why can i only see the top 1/5 of my screen on my dell inspiron laptop? the bottom 4/5 is white with many light green/blue vertical lines. computer seems to be working fine - i can see my screen saver...

A few things you could do to test out this issue.. is if you gave a desktop, try hooking up the screen from the desktop to the port on the laptop and seeing if it looks the same..

If it does look the same, then the issue is with your video card..

If the desktop screen looks normal, then the issue is with your laptops screen and it will need to be replaced

The screen is frozen at the Window XP screen

See if you can boot in safe mode. Turn on computer and repeatedly press F5, select the safe mode option if you can get in then the problem might be you have too many start up programs trying to load when windows start. Find out which ones you do not need and prevent them from starting up when you log on.

  1. Restart your computer and press 'F8' a few times ( right away) this well take you to a list of options, choose 'safe mode'
  2. When windows is loaded up ( it well look all grainy, this is normal for safe mode) right click on your desktop
  3. choose properties
  4. under the 'desktop' tab select a new desktop picture'
  5. restart computer.
If that doesn't work, let me know and we well take it further.

Does backlight stay on, or does it look like the screen is turned off? If it looks like it is turned off, can you look extremely closely and see your desktop if held in good light?
