Problem for Samsung SPH-i700 Pocket PC
Samsung SPH-i700
By Melissa - usenet poster
I was playing with one of these today at the local verizon store. The screen
is so clear, and the pocket pc windows invironement is very nice. the swivel
camera is very nice and the windows media player with sound ius very nice.
the SD slot is very nice.
Question is with that huge screen and speakers etc etc, how long can you
realistically expect the battery to last when using those various finctions?

How do you guys have this phone? I was given quite the run around by
customer service when I tried to order this handset.

I had to go to my Verizon store and ask them to order it via "direct
fulfillment". No CS rep would allow me to order it from Verizon.

So what do you do to make a call like this using the I700 ?
Do you have to store the access phone number, your PIN and
the number you want to call as 3 separate numbers and enter
them separately ?
Will the I700 let you enter these numbers separately without
disconnecting ?

Ihad this phone and retuned it all in one day. Maybe I did not give it a
long enough trial but I can rell you that you CANNOT make a stringrd
call like you want. There is no way or symbal to use for a delay or
pause. This is per the second level techs at Samsung. You can do this on
a $100.00 phone but not on this. He told me they have had several
complaints about this and may at some point change the software but it
might not be upgradeable to exisiting phones

Sam,
I also use Outlook via the Internet for SMTP! That's the whole point!
SMTP is the protocol that ALL standard email systems use to send email
over the Internet. This includes Outlook, Outlook Express, PocketPC
Outlook, Netscape, etc. If you are using Outlook on the Internet you
ARE using SMTP to send email.
POP3 is the standard protocol for receiving email. Most email programs
also support IMAP or IMAP4 for receiving email, but still use SMTP for
sending.
Many companies use Outlook with MS Exchange for email, which does
not necessarily use SMTP/POP3/IMAP. However, this is for internal
networks and not for the Internet. If you want to access MS Exchange
email from your PocketPC or any other Internet-connected device, you
usually have to establish a VPN connection first, and yes, you can do
this with the i700.
Forget the level 2 support techs at Verizon or Samsung. 99% of their
calls deal with plain old cell phones and they don't understand or have
not yet been trained in this technology.
I'd be curious to know what "standard" you are using with Outlook to
send email if it's not SMTP.

You CAN program pauses into the dial string.
Here's what I did with my i700:
1. Start the phone application.
2. Click Tools->Options.
3. Note the "Voicemail" text field already has "*86".
4. Edit this field, add "pp*pxxxx", where "xxxx" is your voicemail PIN.
5. Click "ok".
This works. It dials the voicemail systrem, pauses for about two seconds,
enters the "*" to interrupt the message and prompts, waits another
second, and then enters your PIN.
You can do this for any phone number in the contacts list. I added an entry
for my home and office voicemail systems, too. The only trick is getting
the
number of p's right for the proper duration of the pause.

Reed,
I am trying again without any better success. The major problem is that
the techs know less than I do and that's not too much.
I still cannot get my pop 3 to send. I receive just fine but keep
getting undeliverable to sent emails. Pictures are even mor difficult nd
they should ot be from what I understand.

SMTP is the difference. Not all of us use SMTP. I use Outlook via the
internet and was not able to send any emails, the level two techs at
Samsung could not either. I may have been poorly informed and that would
be a shame since I did like the concept of what the I700 does and I love
toys.
The end result was that nothing worked in either email or the ability to
send photos and the people at both Verizon and Samsung had very little
to offer in the way of help.
One would expect that the techs had enough time to learn the devise and
that something like this would allow pauses to be placed.
I am glad it's working for you, maybe some time in the future I will
give it anothet try.

Either would I. I played with the 7135, the only thing I did not ike was
the feel of the buttons. I think the size and form and feel of build are
very nice.

I also find this hard to believe. With my Kyocera 7135 I just
enter a "," for a 2-second pause and "%" for a hard pause.
This feature in combination with the voice-dial feature makes
it possible for me to call people overseas using my discount
phone card by simply saying their name.
For example, I've programmed my phone so that after I say the
name of a friend overseas the phone will dial my phone card's
access number, pause for 6 seconds (using ",,,"), enter my PIN,
pause another 6 seconds and dial the overseas number including
the country and city codes.
I don't think I would trade this feature for a 0.3 Megapixel
built-in camera :-)

This is absolutely not true! I send email through my POP/SMTP account
several times a day on my i700!
This is an option (syncing with your PC's Outlook email) that's always
been available on the PocketPC platform. I don't use it or need it, since
I can send and receive email directly from the i700.
Sam, I still think you were poorly informed on how to use this phone/PDA!

The email is handled by a standard POP3/IMAP client called Pocket Outlook.
The phone/pda has to connect to Express Network, and then the client
connects to your email server to download messages. You can set Pocket
Outlook to automatically connect and download messages periodically, which
is similar to "push"ed email.
SMS messages are "pushed" to the phone.
Email attachments are also handled just like a standard email client. To
view the attachments, you must have the appropriate application installed.
For example, DOC files (MS Word) can be viewed with the built-in
Pocket Word app. To view PDF files, you must install a Pocket PC
version of Acrobat Reader.

Here in the NY area it is quite slower. You might be right about not
giving it too much of a chance b ut I did spend over 8 hours on the
phone between verizon and Samsung and they really were of no help.
I think before they send out a $800.00 phone they should get the
training to support the product and learn on my time. The only way I
could do emails was with an email client I use which is great,
Gopherking. It's a pay client but well worth it, but would not send
pictures as this is useing the Exp. Net which would not allow anything
to go out on it that was captured through an email, text on Gopherking
was fine.

You can get emails and attachments just fine useing your POP3 you cannot
send. This is so true that they include a software package on CD that
you use to active sinc your email replies to your PC and then send
through your PC POP3 server.

Not according to the level two tech people at Samsung. They agree that
this is how it is "usually" done but not on this devise. They themselves
thought this was a strange thing to leave out and told me they had
started to send this info back to the programing people as a complaint

I've been informed that a comma or a "p" inserted in the dial string
will create a two second pause.

Thanks for your post, Reed.
As to the email, is it "push" like on a Blackberry, or do you have to log on
to a network and "pull" it. How about handling email attachments, like .PDF
files?
TIA

I must tell you I had this for ONE day and returned it this morning. It
is a horrible devise to use and NO ONE at either Verizon Wireless
Express Net or at Samsung know enough to help anyone who needs any
trouble shooting.
It will not handle POP3 mail as one would use it off a PC. You must get
a seperate email client to make this work wirelessly and if it will not
use your POP3 it will not send photos as they are sent via email.
The connection is quite slow and very expensive at the price. I have a
Treo 300 from Sprint that does a better job at most things though it has
no picture capture ability, which I only wanted as a toy. The Treo on
Sprint Vision is faster and easier to use and I never thought I would
say anything that positive about Sprint but lately they have been just
great and customer service picks up in a very brief time.
The I700 does not have the ability to put in pauses between strings of
numbers, not soft or hard, so if you want to get into your voicemail you
have to do it by pushing number after number. I have confirmed this with
a Samsung Second level Tech. They are surprised on how many normal
features are lacking. The ringers are very few and the highest setting
is not that high. There are no supported ringers to download.
Do I sound like I liked this devise????

Sam, I just got an i700 and I think it's great! I had been using an iPaq
with
an Aircard 555 for the past year. I find that the i700 is faster, lighter
and
sleeker that the iPaq/555 combo, and has all the necessary phone features
that I've been looking for. Maybe you had some setup issues or problems
getting support.
The standard PocketPC Inbox can be configured to get your POP3 email.
I use it constantly for this and have 4 POP3 accounts and an IMAP account
set up.
I send photos, files, etc. as attachments to email all the time, no problem!
My Express Network connection speed averages 90 - 100Kbps here in
Texas (it might be slower in other parts of the country). My experience
with Sprint showed 40-50Kbps speeds.
I don't know about programming pauses into phone numbers, haven't tried it,
but I'll look into it now that you've brought it up. I bet there's a way to
do it!
I keep my i700 on vibrate so I don't care too much about the ringers,
I have downloaded numerous other ringers from various web sites (even
created my own) and they work fine. You may be able to find a
downloadable ringer at the right frequency that you could hear better.
I can tell that you didn't like the phone, but I don't think you gave it
much
of a chance. One day? This is fairly new stuff, so I wouldn't trust any
tech
support person with any of these issues.
If you ever give this phone another chance, let us know. There are lots of
people in these groups that might be able to help you.
