Check spark plugs have the right gap. heated plugs that are worn will give you a misfire, also if not been changed in a few years would replace them.

Diagnostic code p0301 idles rough after warming up, check engine lite is on, when accelerating check lite flashes and car bogs down letting up on gas helps engine catch up


Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine runtime 3 seconds, engine speed change under 1200 rpm, and the PCM detected a misfire condition present in one cylinder during the 200 (Catalyst) or 1000 revolution (Emission) test range.Note: If the misfire is severe, the MIL will flash on/off on the 1st trip!

Possible Causes:

  • Fuel metering (fuel injector dirty) problem affecting Cylinder 1
  • Base engine (compression) problem affecting Cylinder 1
  • Ignition system (spark plug or plug wire) problem on Cylinder 1

I have a misfire on cylinder #5 on my 1997 Ford F150 with a 4.2 . I have changed the coil, plugs, wires and injector. I have 180 lbs of compresson on cylider 5 and 150 in all others. Can anyone help me?...

The lower intake have ported egr ..the ports will get clogged and the one thats open will get all the flow and cause it to misfire..Remove the upper intake and take a small drill bit and clean out the ports..Seen this a million times..Take and warm the engine up,hold the engine about 2000 rpms and see if the engine has a slight shake..Then disconnect the vacuum line to the egr ,,and bring it up to about 2000 rpm and see if it dont go away..We have a whole fleet of them..And all of them get clogged up..Make sure the engine is hot before you do it..

2000 Nissan Sentra 1.8L. High mileage (330,000 plus miles). May take 5min or longer to start cold- acts like it's not firing one or more cylinders. Once it starts there's a big cloud like it was flooded....

Sounds like either it has a bad valve, or worn rings. With the mileage, I would suspect it's just plain getting worn out, when the engine warms up it internal tolerances are better then cold.

What makes a van 3.3.liter skip when it warm but not when its cold do you think it may be the coil

The most common causes of a skip or misfire is a bad plug wire[s] or spark plug[s]. Here's what I look for whenever I do an initial test drive to verify a misfire, stumble, or skip complaint. Once the motor is warmed up I get up to about 48 mph. At that speed the transmission is in 4th gear and the torque converter clutch is locked up giving the engine a solid connection to the drivetrain so any little skip can be felt [you usually can't feel a misfire unless the Torque Converter is locked up due to the fluid drive dampening the sudden but brief change in crankshaft speed during the misfire] Once I'm at 48mph I ease into the throttle just as much as I can without the transmission downshifting. This combination gives you the leanest fuel condition, the highest spark load on the ignition system, and a solid engine to drivetrain connection which makes catching a misfire quite easy. With a little practice at this they'll stick out like a sore thumb. I RARELY have to replace a coil on a 3.3L but often have to replace plug wires and plugs. Look for black soot like coating in the far end of the plug wire boots, rusty or corroded coil towers [where the plug wires attach to the coils] or worn spark plugs. 9 out of 10 times that's where I find the problem. If you're handy with an ohm meter you can test the plug wires and should find about 1,000 ohms per inch of wire. The reason most misfires aren't felt on a cold engine is due to how rich the fuel system has to be to keep a cold engine going and its far easier to fire a cool/rich fuel mixture than a hot/lean mixture. You usually can't feel them during fast/hard acceleration for the same reason and the torque converter clutch is usually disengaged during both of these types of operation.

2000 expedition 5.4 lt run fine when cold when warm misses bad anyone know whats wrong??

a very common problem for the 5.4 fords is the coil packs going bad. normally misfires once heated up and under slight load ( in overdrive going up a grade) if the check engine light is on, it can help pinpoint which cylinder is misfiring. if plugs haven't been replaced within last 50-60k miles, plan on replacing plugs, and usually the coil pack that goes bad is one of the rear ones, but impossible to tell without a scan tool. if you don't own one, take it to a shop

2000 Focus Zetec-rough idle, very rough under load.

you haven't said if its petrol or diesel so i'm assuming its petrol since your smelling sulfur sounds if you have a misfire causes could be plugs,leads or ign coil i suspect its ign coil these are common to go.

Engine misses when placed under load

replace the plug wires this will fix your secondary ignition breakdown. the egr code is due to a bad dpfe sensor which is for back pressure on egr valve.this will not cause misfire.
