My Rheem water heater is giving a ECO failure, How can I fix this?

Question posted under Rheem water heater.
Model number and gas valve are unknown. Add a comment.

Following information applies to typical tank-type gas water heater, and does not apply to tankless water heaters, boilers, indirect heaters, solar water heaters, etc or for electric water heater.

Electric water heater ECO is located on upper thermostat.
Open top cover and ECO can be reset by pushing in red reset button,
Or ECO can be replaced by replacing thermostat. Add a comment.

Open following link to see typical tank-type gas water heater ECOs:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Intellivent-ECO-900.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Typical-gas-valve-500.jpg

The ECO will trip at 180-200 degrees F.
This happens when the thermostat fails, then the burner stays on, and the water will continue heating.

With most water heaters, the ECO is one-time use device and the gas control valve is replaced.
Some water heaters have resettable ECO, but the overheating problem has to be solved.
Each water heater is different.
Contact Rheem or read manual for correct procedure.

If you have intellivent gas control valve, open following links for typical service manual:

7-25-11. Purchased Reliance 909 model 950 GKRT 200 natural gas hot water heater. 7-31-11, installed said hot water heater according to instructions and code, filled with cold water and checked for gas and...

The problem requires looking at manual and service handbook, except handbook doesn't show most recent water heater.
My first check point would be gas supply, and then vent draft, and then air supply.
Take off front cover and try lighting again to make sure air supply is not problem.
Review lighting instructions.
If there is no gas, and gas is turned ON, then gas control valve is suspect.

Tank is rusted out, and requires replacement.

I) To protect yourself from ruptured tank, you should turn it off and use it only when hot water is needed.

II) How to install ordinary tank-type water heater yourself:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html

III) There are 5 preventable things that kill a water heater and cause it to rust away.

1) Anode rod depletion.
Loosen anode rod before installing water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

2) Stray current corrosion
http://waterheatertimer.org/9-ways to save-with-water-heater.html#Ground-tank

3) Sediment build up because no water softener
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html

4) Corrosive effects of water softener, and anode rod not inspected (see #1 above)
