If the sim fits its the right type of card, if it needed a certain carrier (ie Telstra) SIM Card, your putting the sim in it would have locked it not just not read it. Either you put the sim in the wrong way, make sure the metal on the sim matched up with the metal grates on the phone OR more than likely the phone is faulty and needs to be fixed.

You need to purchase a network unlock code from '3'. This will enable you to put any sim in the handset.
Local markets somtimes do a phone unlock service too.
