Shut the pump down. Open the lid on the pump to allow into the system. This will drain the plumbing lines at the equipment. Drain water from heater by removing drain plugs(usually 3) Shut the gas valve off to the heater and undo the union that is usually after the valve(recommend gas fitter doing this and he should reattach any piping or rethread new cut pipe. Cut or disconnect water lines from and to the heater. Remove old heater Install new heater in location and reconnect water lines to appropriate side of the headers(water inlet and outlets for heater). Gasline reconnect via gas fitter. Light pilotand restart pump after filling with water and repriming

Hayward pool heater smoke

Is it smoke? Could it be steam?
If so, condensation "Rain in the inside of your new heater". This is a real problem & needs to be checked out by a Certified Heater Technical service man. Preferrably, not the one who installed.

The heater literally stinks for some time after it is installed as the fire tile burns in. Every heater we install makes my eyes burn if I get a good whiff of the fumes...Are you certain the utility actually tested the discharge air? My guess would be someone walked up and gave it a sniff and over-reacted to what is a normal odor from a new heater. You can of course double check your flames from below the burner tray. If they are nice bright blue standing 2 - 4 inches tall your heater is operating normally and the smell should subside shortly after it gets some steady use.

We have a less then 1year old heater that is burnt out becuse we put clorine tablets in the skimmers lxi gas pool heater

You owners manual will tell you that putting chorine tabs innto your skimmer will damage your heater and void the warranty. I am sure you already know this now. It is bad procedure to do this. I assume you have a leaking heat exchanger. This is very costly, and you will probably need to call a professional to install it. If the heater was much older, i would probably say to just buy a new heater. The exchanger usually run about half the price of a new heater.

Smoke or vapor coming from new h400fdn hayward pool heater.

Not at all uncommon. New heaters have to glaze over the file tile in the burner chamber and will often smoke and smell during the first week or so of operation.

Using a mirror, check to see that your flames are about 4" proud of the burner tubes when running. As long as they are and the color is a nice blue with little to no yellow/orange color, the heater is fine.
