Question about GPS
I have a Simrad CA 42 which has died. It was working fine but suddenly stopped. I have checked all the fuses in the power supply and a single fuse on the circuit board and all are fine. The power lead is ok and power is being applied to the crcuit board from the power terminals. I have checked the 3V memory battery and this appears ok at 2.7V. All the connecting ribbons are secure. I have also tried a factory reset to no avail. When power is applied and the power key pressed the keypad illuminates for a second before going blank and no keypad tone is evident. The screen stays blank and dark although, when the power is removed it appears to lighten but remains blank. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a possible cause please? Thanks.

best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Did you measure the continuity of the primary and secondaries of the transformer which drops the line voltage to supply the front panel? Any chance you could scan and post the "mini-manual" that comes inside the unit? I repair just about any kind of control board / system out there, in case you might be interested. My listing is here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

had same problem. the cause was corrosion in the boat wiring. the power wire was corroded 95%thru. there was enough voltage to start the unit but when the sounder kicks in the voltage dropped below minimum and the unit shut off. took a LOOOONG time to find.

That unit does not have a touch screen so holding the screen while powering up wont do anything. I'm not sure which key it is on that model, but to do a reset you hold down one of the keys while powering up. Try holding down the enter key while you power up. If that doesn't work, try again with the other keys until you find it. If it doesn't reset, you may have a dead keypad.

I have the same problem. The unit works until I connect it to whatever computer via USB (Mac or PC). The screen blanks out as soon as I plug in the USB cable. I have to disconnect the device and only then I am able to turn it on again. That started after Firmware update from V 2.90 to 3.00 . I am not sure this is causing problem. What about the firmware versions of your devices ? Are they all on the latest ?
However, does anybody know if there is a way to go back to firmware version 2.9 if it is not possible anymore to connect the device to any computer (evtl. through putting data on the microSD card ?).
