Sony KP75HW40 unstable red. (not the usual problem)

OK I have been posting A lot of what I hope are solutions for people. Now I need help with my TV. I have a Sony KP57HW40, I already went through the screen turning to one color and shutting off ****. I did the screen adjustments to fix that problem. The set was fine for a couple of months then one day I noticed a slight flicker in the screen (red) I just dealt with it and it actually got better. Last night, I was watching the TV (for about 2hours) and the red flickered a little like it used to then it went completely red and shut off. This happened fast it didn't gradually go to red it just flashed to an extremely bright red for about a half a second before it shut off. It flashed a code 6 which I got 2 different explanations for. I was told it could be the focus block (bad pot) by one person (which I can see) and that it was a bad picture tube by someone else. It looks to me like a high voltage issue. It seems like it was a high voltage spike that caused the bright red flash. Am I in the ball bark with this? I can see how a bad focus block could cause this being that a bad pot could cause unstable voltage regulation. By the way, I turned the TV back on and it was fine again for about an hour then it went red again but it returned back to normal just as fast and the set didn't shut off. It was fine for the last 20 or so minutes or so before I went to bed. It may have had that slight flicker again but I wasn't really paying attention. When its on there are no retrace lines or unusual color except for the occasional red flicker. What do you think could cause this?? Please let me know if you need more info.

Which one is the CRT drive board and is there something that can be repaired on the board or would I have to replace the board?

  • Anonymous Mar 18, 2009

I think it may be the red CRT after all. I checked out the board, wiggled the wires and tapped on the focus block with no luck. I tapped on the neck of the CRT and bam it flashed. It seems to be most sensitive on the neck. I tapped on and moved/wiggled the board and that doesn't seem to change anything. The only reaction I get is when I tap on the CRT itself. What do you think? If CRT is bad where can I get one cheap if I decide to fix it? Just curious, what causes the flash? (assuming it is the tube)

I am again at a loss with this set. I was convinced it was the red tube but now after messing with it, all three colors are doing it. I don't know what the sings are for dieing tubes but this is what it does now. The set is fine for around a half hour then it will start to flicker most of the time it isn't that bad almost not noticeable at times. Sometimes, it gets bad but it doesn't seem to be any particular color. usually after 5 to 15 min of that it goes back to normal. It hasn't shut off since my last post. The time frames are not consistent but the problem does usually correct itself.

I did have the lines on one tube at one time but I turned down the screen on the affected CRT to remove them. (I'm assuming your referring to retrace lines) I don't remember what one though. I never heard any snapping sounds. Being that it looks like its not contained to one gun where else do you suggest I should look for solder problems?

I have a same model as you but the screen flashes blue and then shuts off and blinks 8 times. I am trying to figure out what and how to fix it.

I would suggest either the Focus block or the RED CRT drive board either one of those items could cause the symptom. A defective CRT could also, but a shorted CRT doesnt usually go back to being normal

The CRT Drive boards are located at the very bottom of each CRT. From the symptom of sometime sorrecting itself it could be just a solder connection on the socket pins on that board as that controls focus as well as the focus lead enters the CRT drive board at the socket on that board

sounds like a solder problem more than anything. The signs of a tube getting ready to develope a short will be two things

    1. a snapping sound

    2. razor thin sharp lines that are slightly curved that are the same color as the affected CRT

Rolling of picture

Hi,
You camera is PAL and you are attaching with Ntsc TV or VCR. Both Pal and Ntsc are different systems and incompatible to each other.
If you want to see correct playback of your Camera, it requires Pal or Multi-System color TV.
Need further info, please let me know.
