Compaq Presario CQ50 Comes on but the screen is very dark!

The Presario's have an intensity control for the screen.

Mine is holding the function button (Fn) down an pressing F8 for brighter, F7 for dimmer.

The marking on my F7and F8 show an asterisk indicating "sun" for intensity.

This is the service manual for your laptop....
If you hold down the Fn key....lower left on keyboard., and look at the top of the keyboard and look for the "F" key that has the symbol of the sun or a light on it, that is the "function" key and when you hold down the Fn key tap the appropriate function key and that changes the value of what you want.

Dark screen if unhooked from battery

You can use the function keys to increase the brightness. Also if you go to Start, Control Panel, Power Options you can change the settings to give you more monitor time.

Compaq WF1907 Bottom brighter than top

The last 3 monitors I bought all have this problem and all three were different brands. I sent one model back a few times, and the replacement monitors all had the same problem to different degrees. To me, this problem is glaring--the tops seem too dim and the bottom is at least twice as bright looking straight on from about 1.5 feet away. The thing is, most people will never notice it because of the gradual way the brightness changes. Anyway, at this point I feel qualified to say that (at least for 24 in. monitors in my price range) this is the norm. I'm afraid we have to live with it or pony up some extra dough.
