I tried playing Rockband for PS2 and the PS3 console gave me an error message that the disc wasnt formatted to play on the PS3. I thought the PS3 could play all PS games. Any ideas?

if your trying to play a ps2 or ps1 game then your ps3 is not backwards compatable so it will only play ps3 games that goes for most ps3's that are 20gb or 40gb cause we have 2 ps3s in my house my sons is 40 and mines is 80gb and his wont play ps2 games but mines will and thats the reason why.
try this. worked for some people. stand the PS2 on it's side before inserting disc. never move the console with the disc playing, doing so may ruin the disc and laser lens.
If your PS3 is brand new, you most likely have to update the system's
software to a more current version in order to properly play many
Blu-Ray discs.
In order to update your PS3 system:
Go to the home menu, move to the "Settings" tab (the 2nd tab from the
far left), scroll down to "System Update". It takes about 5 minutes to
download and fully download the update, but it should solve the problem.

Take it to Gamestop or somewhere they repaired disc i know it maynot be sratch but i read online and goggle i found somewhere they took it there and they try to play it it works but here is my pre. solution i'll be doing more research k
I had this problem and it really made me mad. I tried re formatting , reset settings and nothing. Then I tried using some air sprayer that people use on computer key board and I sprayed in where the disc goes and now it works perfectly. Perfectly!
