Jack up the rear end using the frame. Put a person or cinder block on the seat, and put it in drive. Look for the shafts turning inside the wheels indicating broken keyways.

SOURCE: hydrostat trans starting to make moaning noise stops pulling

it may be full of dirt etc and has soaked up most of the oil inside the case, if the axle seals are worn and the selector shaft seal is worn I would say that is the problem, if that is the case you may be up for a new trans as I have done a transaxle just recently and the damage inside was extensive and expensive.
you will have to remove the trans and seperate the trans case for inspection
Hope this helps

SOURCE: Ichanged the rear drive belt on my 17 hp

Ok, I see it's and MTD product. Did you replace both belts? The front belt is #954-0280 and the rear belt is # 954-0370. What I would suggest is remove the cover plate between your legs. You'll have to remove the shift knob and two screws. Start the engine, put the gearshift in nuetral and let out on the clutch pedal and observe what's happening. Everything will be working the same as if you were in gear. You should be able to see if there is a problem with one of the belts or the vari-speed pulley. Put the speed selector in 7th (or 6th) gear and push the clutch down then back up, and watch what going on. That's the best I can do without seeing it myself. Hope this helps.

Toro TimeCutter cranks but when I try to go forward or backward it goes dead and will not move. Funky smellll

Sounds as if you have deck pulley that is bad and locked up and belt is smoking trying to turn, this in turn kills engine due to stress applied to it.

Jerky movement

there are 2 drive belts that control the transmission. 1 is a variable speed drivebelt going from the engine back to the trans. it is the long one. the shorter belt drives the trans. off of the other variable speed belt. both belts are located under the mower and are not fun to get to. I would bet that one of these belts are slipping and grabbing, giving you the jerky ride. visually inspect for cracks or peeling, then check tensioning system for the belt to make sure they have the correct tension. less likely would be in the geardriven trans. it might act that way if some teeth of the gears inside are worn or broke. one other thing to check if all else looks good.... the variable belt drive pulley expands and contracts to change speed of the transmission input. I have seen these pulleys fail to operate correctly and this could also cause the ride to ****. hope some suggestions here help. R

Our john deere sabre 17.542 hs ride on mower will not go forwards or backwards. We're looking for a diagram of the hydraulic gearbox/diff

If traction drive belt is turning you should check the input drive shaft on top of trans to see if it is turning as well,Traction drive belt is suspect but could be a stripped out input shaft pulley.Make sure the machine tow lever is not pulled out, rear of machine by tow hitch. Also pull rubber caps off of both axle ends to see if one the axles is turning free inside of rim,if so remove wheel and replace axle key.

Pull your washer forward then tilt the top backwards until it sits at about a 45 degree angle. There should be a belt and 3 pulleys underneath. Remove the belt (one of the pulleys will move to allow slack) Ignore the moving pulley and the large pulley in the center. The third pulley is your pump. Try to turn it by hand, it should move freely. Presumably, it wont and will need to be replaced.
