SOURCE: trying to replace 3 speed
The pull switch has 4 wires, L, 1, 2, 3.
Connect ' L' to the reverse switch red wire or the wire that is free.
Connect ' 3 ' to the main black ( hot ) wire entering the fan.
Connect ' 1 ' to the capacitor's lowest uF eg. ( 1.5 uF )
Connect ' 2 ' to the capacitor's next uF eg. ( 3 uF )
the Capaciotr also has to be connected to the neutral wire entering the fan, usually black attached to another color wire. If you have a VOM tester, veryfy that it is a neutral wire.

I ran into this when replacing the 3 spd switch. The replacement switch has a pair of connections at each position; you would assume the two connections are electrically tied together, they are not. The switch assembly actually has two seperate 4-position rotary switches. If your "L" wire is on the 'inner' connection, then your motor speed wires will have to be as well.

The reverse switch on my Hampton Bay ceiling fan didn't work. I cut the 6 wires; 1 white, 1 gray, 2 pink, 2 yellow. Here's what I did. Removed reverse switch. Had 6 wires white, gray, 2 yellow, 2 pink. Connected gray to yellow, connected white to pink and fan runs fine. Is this OK? I do not need to reverse fan. It's been running for 1 hour now with no problems. Don S.

Hello. The most common configuration is L- white(hot) 1- Black(low) 2- Blue(med) 3- Yellow(high). Here's a link to some troubleshooting advice: http://www.ceiling-fans-n-more.com/ceiling-fan-pullchain-replacement-and-repair.php and a link to diagrams: http://www.hurontel.on.ca/~taitg/pages/cfan.html
