GE Microwave PVM1790DR1BB light works but no fan and the turntable does not turn

Hi, I have a GE micriwave/Convetion model PVM1790DR1BB when trying to microwave the timer and the light work but no other sounds. It will not heat a glass of water or spark with a metallic objet in the oven. What could be some potential problems?

I have this exact model with the same issue. I am a technician by trade on office equipment. I took the cover off where the door latches go in and there are 3 relay switches behind there. I adjusted the switches so the door latch would make better contact with them.

If you look at consumer affairs.com, there are many problems like this with GE microwaves. Not a good track record, experiencing problems with mine as well.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

SOURCE: Microwave turns on, but no heat or turntable movement

The problem is that the magnatron is not getting power. Chance is that if could be a bolwn fuse inside the unit. If the fuse don't fix it then that leaves the charging diode, capacitor or the magnatron, or high voltage xformer of which without technical epertize I would not recomend attempting to replace. good luck

SOURCE: everything works except the cooking part/no heating/turntable not turning, help!

you may have gotten a power surge and that can cause some funny things to happen, 1st is there power to the oven, 2nd if so there may be an internal fuse protector built in to the oven, check with the manual for anything of that sort listed. if not you may have to take it in and have it repaired by a pro. there is a lot of voltage in these ovens and unless you know what you are doing a person could get hurt

SOURCE: GE XL 1800 microwave light and fan operate but no heat

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

The diode is a fairly cheap fix, and your magnetron is still under the part warranty, but you would have to pay labor.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (1 year), G.E. will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

If it's within the mag warranty, G.E. should send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832 with your model, serial, and manufacturing date.

If nothing else, you can save about $50-75 if you remove it from the wall and take it to a GE-authorized servicer.

You can find a GE-authorized servicer by calling GE Appliance Service at 1-800-848-7620 or here.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

GE Model # JVM7195SFSS microwave.

Check the internal ceramic fuse on the circuit board. Sometimes one section will work while another won't. I'm not sure if this model has a rear mounted thermal fuse, but the models with the inline thermal fuse will cause a similar issue.

Light and fan stay on and turntable no longer work

Hi,
Not sure if your model has a belt driven turntable or gear driven. The cause of your problem is most likely a worn or loose drive gear or a drive belt which is worn or has come off.
Best have this checked at your local repair shop.

Best wishes,

GE Microwave oven vent fan not working

You are correct the fan motor is either stuck or needs replaced.

There is no way to do this without removing the entire microwave. In case your not familiar with how microwaves work, there is a capacitor that is very large inside and can hold a charge even after it is unplugged for up to 24 hours, please take action to prevent getting shocked.

Turntable not moving, otherwise micriwave works.

If the rest of the oven works fine, then this indicates that you might have a problem with the motor that turns the turntable.

If you try to turn the turntable manually (gently), does it turn freely or is there resistance? If it turns freely, the mechanical mechanism between the turntable and motor may be broken and the motor may be ok.

The oven's microprocessor2.gif also controlls the motor. There could be a problem there.

You'll need to have it looked at by a service center. Although its not that difficult to determine which of the reasons I mentioned above is the cause, it can be however, dangerous to operate a microwave oven with the cover off and with high voltage circuits exposed.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good luck!

Microwave seems to turn on when door latch is opened

What's happening is you are activating one door switch a little before the other, and that is causing your light, fan, and turntable to come on. The plastic parts are not perfectly rigid, so they flex a little when you press the button, and that causes the lag to be more apparent. Even if you press the door open faster and look really close, you may notice the light, fan, and turntable coming on for a split second. That's perfectly normal. The relay on the control board must also be turned on before it will actually be cooking.
