Put on smaller gear first, then put chain on larger gear as much as you can. Then lift rear of bike and pedal forward.

I was just given a diamondback SHERWOOD bike. I don't know how to use the gears -- what's the right shifting pattern for hills

Google "bicycle shifting technique", for example:

You should NEVER run cross-chained (big-big or small-small). The drive train performs best when the chain line is as close to straight as possible.

Excess sideways stress on the chain will wear it out prematurely and decrease its normal efficiency.

To demonstrate this for yourself, put the bike in the same combination of gears you

Good Day I have got a RYOBI Planer Thicknesser Model AP13 and one of the chains did broke. Are these chains ordinary Bicycle Chains or are these chains spesial chains. Regards Karl Schweizer

Part # 827794 Chain
They sure do look like bicycle chains, but without measuring the links with a micrometer and comparing them with a bicycle chain, i wouldn't be comfortable installing one you made based off of eyeballing it alone. You may know this already, but be sure to remove both sprockets the certain chain rides on, and assembling the 3 pieces as one assembly back on the shafts, its much easier then loosening the shafts from the main unit.

My grandsons bike chain broke. Went to the store to buy a new chain. On the back of the package it said I needed a chain rivet extractor and of course, the store didn't carry that tool. How can I fix...

You should go to a bike shop, they can sell you a master link, and keep your own chain. Is your grandson's bike a 1 speed or a multi speed bike, if it is multi then you need a chain tool. Bike shops can do the job cheaper than you can buy the tool and it will be done right. Take the chain back to the store that didn't carry the tool.

Putting the cahin back on???duh???

If the chain has just slipped of the best way get it back on is to physically lift it into place at the top of the chain ring (the cog where the pedals are).
Then turn the pedals in the direction you would usually pedal (you may have to lift the back wheel off the ground).
This ought to pull the chain back on and let you get back on the open road.

I need an owners manual for the land rider bike. bike takes to long to shift up or down, sometimes not at all. thank you, frank

most bicycle owners manuals do not explain bicycle mechanics and are rarely of any use other than basic bicycle safety. You shifting issue is not specific to your brand of bicycle anyway, as it is simply a mechanical issue. Probably a good cleaning of the drivetrain and re-lube would make the bike shift better. Use a degreaser and stiff brush and water and clean up the chain and the chain rings and the gears or cogs on the back hub. Follow up with a good chain lube.

Bike chain broke on my 21speed promax A series MGX,how do i replace it?

You will need to first determine what the chain broke. If it is because of where you will need to replace the can with a new on. If it was anothe reason then you have a couple options. If you want to repair this yourself you will need to have a bicycle chain tool. Otherwise your local bicycle shop can reinstall the chain for a very low cost, less then the cost of a new chain tool.

If you are going to install it you can remove the bad link and reinstall the chain, however this will likely make you chain too short.

If you are going to replace the chain:
1. Lay the old chain out completely.
2. Cut the new chain the same length as the old chain. If using the quick link provided then make sure to cut the chain with two male ends and make it one link shorter then the original chain.
3.Start installing the chain from the rear derailleur. Start putting the chain in from the lower pulley(wheel on derailleur). Push over the lower pulley and under the upper pulley. Then back up behind and over the cassette (gears on the rear)
4. Now continue pulling the chain to the front. Go through the front derailluer and down around the chainrings.
5. Connect with the other end of the chain.
6.Use the quick link provided with the new chain or push the pin back into the chain (unless in is a shimano chain, then use the provided new pin)

I have a pacific usa mountain bike and the chain broke an i bought a chain and I cant figer out how to put it back together

well usually all chains have a link that comes off. if you get that to come apart, then you put the chain on the teeth were the teeth come through between the links. then you link back together the two chain links. it might be a little hard though

Bicycle Chain Problem

Your chain problem is probably because your chain is not tightened and maintained.
You should clean your chain after a ride, and oil it (very little oil).
Good luck
