Computer will not startup

I have a model PT800DBP motherboard that, when I turn power on, gives me an 8 second beep followed by a 5 second rest, then an another 8 second beep, etc. etc. There is no communication indicated to the monitor or anything else. The power light does not illuminate, but there is obviously power. There is no led indication of any other activity as well, even when I depress delete immediately after turning on power. I have swapped memory modules, monitors, tried a different hard drive, etc. The motherboard fan is running so I believe the power supply is ok. This computer was working ok many months ago but hasn't been started since then. Could it be that the ram battery is dead?

H there.
The beep codes you describe sound like memory issues or failure, take the system memory out, clean the contacts and the slots with a clean, soft, dry paintbrush. Re-seat the memory firmly and try boot the PC again.
Please post back with the results

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

It's possible that the cmos needs to be reset, the jumper should be next to the battery. Change the jumper to the reset position, do a brief power on, turn off the unit, put the jumper back to it's original position and power the unit on.

Are you using onboard video (if the board has it) or above board? If above board remove the video card and attempt to boot using the onboard video so you can go into the bios to check that the onboard video is properly disabled and that init display is set to AGP or PCI.

Another possibility is incompatible ram, you can see that same type of error...

I've literally just had EXACTLY the same problem on my brother's old PC.

It was quite easily cured by completely powering off (including removing the power supply from the wall), removing the memory modules and cleaning the contacts with a soft cloth lightly soaked in ethanol. I then cleaned out the memory slots of dust and dirt with a fine, dry artist's paintbrush.

About five minutes later, ensuring the contacts were dry, I replaced them and voila, a working PC again!
