The hose with the filter in the tank is the pick up, the other is return. the pick up is usualy goes towards the middle pipe on the carby. if you get them around the wrong way it wont pick of fuel..

Screw the mixtures in untill they just bottom and screw them out 1 to 1.5 turns start up set low mix untill its just "four stroking" the set the high.

There should be one screw (I'm assuming it's the Carter YF carburetor 1 barrel) that's by itself away from linkages etc, more to center at base of carb where it meets manifold, that is angled approx 45 degrees going in to base. That should be your mixture screw. What symptoms are you experiencing anyway?

I always understood that the rule of thumb is to back out 2 1/2 turns. That is the starting point for any other adjustments, but if it still won't start, then the carb adjustment is not the problem. Check spark and fuel delivery.

This is not the original carburetor that came on the bike. The orignial was a Kehien "butterfly" carburetor. This carburetor is a later "CV" version with the large square looking top on it.

I'll tell you how to access the idle mixture screw on each model. The "butterfly" carb had it's idle mixture screw in a "tower" on top of the carb just forward of the carburetor mounting flange. The square topped "CV" carb has the idle mixture screw underneath the carb at rear of the float bowl.

They both came from the factory with an "anti-tamper" plug of about 3/16 inch diameter (5mm) pressed in over the adjuster screw so that the owner could not mess with the idle mixture.

To get access to the idle mixture adjustment screw, you must drill a small hole in the "anti-tamper" plug. Be very careful not to drill too deeply or you will damage the brass screw underneath the plug. Drill just enough to go through the plug with a small drill bit. Screw a sheet metal screw or start a tap in the hole. If you use the sheet metal screw, use a pair of pliers or something to pull the plug out. If you're using a tap, once you get the hole tapped screw a screw into the hole and use the pliers to pull the plug out.

If your bike will idle at all, start the bike up and allow the engine to warm up. If it won't idle, screw the idle mixture in until it just barely "bottoms" in the hole. Back it out 1 1/2 turns on the "butterfly" carb and about 3 turns on the "CV" carb and start the engine. Adjust the screw to obtain the highest smoothest idle. Then use the throttle stop screw to set the idle speed of the engine. Once you're finished, put a small dab of RTV sealant in the hole over the screw. If you don't do this, water will seep down by the fine threads permanently seizing the screw making it impossible to adjust the idle mixture in the future.

I have a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16 HP motor. It idles fine and it runs OK at high RPMS. But it backfires thru the carburetor during accelerating. Any suggestions?


On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.
  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow . Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed , set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle , hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture .

How do i adjust the carburetor


there will be a plug at the side top of the fuel bowl that you remove to check and adjust the float level while running
the float level is adjusted by the bolt at the top of the cover above the needle and seat adjust until the fuel is level with the threads of the plug
screw that mixture screw/s in all the way then back out 1 1/2 turns
start the engine and adjust the idle speed by the screw on the accelerator lever
set to around 800 rpms
adjust the mixture screw in until the rpms start to slow
now screw the mixture out until the rpms again slow
mixture adjustment is achieved by turning the screw back in 1/2 the turns that you used to turn it out from the slow in position to the slow position out
again adjust the engine rpms by the accelerator screw to the 800 rpms
most engines idle between 700 and 850 rpms unless and efi engine which have around 850 -950 rpms range

Noticed that my Maruti 800 does only 10km per petrol ltr, which is very low for a Maruti 800. Also the engine sound is not smooth. How can I get these fixed?


if it is fuel injected ,have the injectors cleaned. check the fuel pressure as if it is too low then you have to have the throttle setting to wide to get power.

What do you mean by LA in the chainsaw?


Locate the adjustment screws near the carburetor labeled with an "H," an "L," and an "LA." The "H" screw adjusts the high speed fuel-air mixture; the "L" screw adjusts the low speed fuel-air mixture; and the "LA" screw adjusts the idle speed.

the carburetor settings are easy : 1- locate the screw mixture air /fuel 2- wind the screw all the way in 3- unwind the screw 1 1/2 turn and this should be sufficient to set the carburetor back to its original settings for the air/fuel mixture . 4- as for the idling screw , wind it down to suit the revs required

ADJUSTING THE IDLE SPEED AND MIXTURE

Need help on tuning my 2003 Honda crf150 carburetor. My ques is when the bike is started and you rap the throttle it has a slight bog when I rev it. Is there any adjustments on the carburetor?


yes there should be one adjusting screw normally it is a flat head screw driver with a spring around it adjust in to lean fuel mixture and out to enrich fuel mixture should be located near bottom of carburator

Toro lawnmower starts then cuts off. It appears to be leaking fu


If there is a fuel leak causing this problem it could be from the line going to the carburetor or the float bowl. If no leak is present there, could be flooding or a sticking needle in the carburetor allowing fuel to enter constantly.
