The hard drive shows up in the Safely Remove Hardware section (showed all the little dialogues when it was first plugged in and can be ''safely removed'') but does not show up in My Computer folder.
If yours is like mine it's because someone whipped it without reformatting it. Go to Contorl Panel, System and Maint., Admin Tools, Comp Management, Disk Management. You should see the drive there, but unallocated. Right click on the unallocated portion at the bottom of the screen and choose Simple Volume. Follow the Wisard, choose Quick Format and you've formated your Ex. Hard Drive. It should come up in My Computer now. Congrats!

I have the 640 GB My Book Essential Edition and I'm running Windows Vista. It worked initially and I stored a ton of stuff on it for a few months. Suddenly now when I go to plug it in, it tries to search for the drivers and can't find anything. I have never installed drivers, nor can I find anything online for Vista. Please help.
