SOURCE: I installed a new pentair de filter and new

If the pressure is 15 psi on recirculate, and high on filter, the problem is the filter itself, or the valve plumbing. The DE filters are unusal in the fact that they are plumbed like a sand filter, NOT the cartridge filter. If you could give details as to which filter AND multiport valve you have (look on sticker for model number on valve) it would help to figure out if the problem is in the filter or valve.

SOURCE: DE getting into the pool

The grids are the first place to look. You also want to check the manifold for cracks they will usually show up on the underside. Also the air bleed sock on the top of the manifold. Lastly check the grid spreader on the bottom to be sure it is flat and not warped. The grids are the first place to look though and be sure you hose them off well and check for broken frames inside them.

Cant get lid off Waterway Top-Load Filter for spa

When taking apart any filter the lid can have a tendency to stay on due to the vacuum pressure created by the water inside.
Turn off the system, backwash if it's a de filter. Loosen and remove the band clamp, remove the drain plug, open the air release on the top of the filter and wait for all the water to drain. In many cases the lid will now pop off easily.....
If the lid is still stuck, and you have done the previous steps then reinstall drain plug temoporarily and with your hand on top of the filter, turn the system on momentarily and allow the pressure to pop the lid off for you, once it is off turn the system off and proceed with cleaning.
If you then have trouble getting the lid back on do the following steps....
Reinstall drain plug and with the top off of the filter turn the system on and allow it to fill with water(if you have a de filter make sure you have closed the backwash valve)
Once it is full turn off the system and quickly put the lid in place, then either open the backwash valve or remove the drain plug and allow the water to create a vaccum and pull the lid down for you as you help push it down. Reinstall band clamp and plug and you are set

Have a Hayward side mount pro series sand filter. Just recently the top lid has been popping off . Clamp appears to be in good shape. getting a pressure build up. Any thoughts on the cause/

A pressure build up, indicates several possibilities: 1. An obstruction or closed valve after the filter. 2. A clogged filter. If your filter is equipped with a multiport valve, try the valve setting in the backwash or bypass settings and see if the pressure changes. in the bypass setting, if the pressure remains, you have an obstruction or closed valve after the filter. if the backwash setting causes the pressure to drop, you either have a seriously clogged filter or an obstruction or closed valve after the filter. Assuming the sand is less than 2 years in place, have you checked the sand condition by digging down into the sand deep and checking to see how much debris is still in it? Sand filters DO NOT backwash everything out and will build up over time, requiring a complete dump, clean and refill with fresh filtration sand. If you take the time 1 or twice a season to manually stir up the sand and then backwash repeatedly after stirring it up, you can keep the sand in place for several more years of service. If you live in an area with hard water, it is not unusual to see the sand turn hard like concrete and have to be replced after only a couple years of use. This is typical when pool water pH is high and proper maintenance of the chemistry is neglected. As to the lid popping off, this means the pressure is excessive or the clamp is damaged.

Another point to consider if the condition of the pressure gage... is the reading accurate? In most cases the reading should never be higher than 20, ideally, down around 10-15PSI on clean. Any reading higher, indicates a dirty filter or obstruction after the filter.

Recommend backflush pressure of a hayward pool filter

After you have backwashed your filter until the site glass run clear. Go to rinse mode for 30 seconds. Make note of the filter pressure. Don't backwash until the pressure goes up 10 psi!! It is important not to backwash too much. As pressure climbs the sand filter actually filters better.

De filter pressure too high water is cloudy

backwash the filter from main drain until sight glass is clear-this will reduce filter pressure. After backwashing return gate valve to filter position, then filter from main drain only. check water chemistry. add a clarifier to water

How do I backwash my Pentair Vertical Grid DE filter?

For instructions on backwashing and other trouble shooting, you need an Owner's Manual. You can find one online at the following link:

http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/FNSPlusVerticalGridDEFilterOM.pdf

The way you backwash this filter is easy once you get the hang of it!

The first thing you will do is turn off the system, change the valve position to the Backwash position. If you have a Multiport Valve, you will press down on the handle and spin it so that the knotch is pointed to BACKWASH. If you have a Slide Valve, only has two positions, up and down, you turn the handle so that the metal pin is out of the holder and move the handle in the opposite direction. You will need to turn the handle to lock the pin into position.

Once this is done, you will turn on your pump. Pentair recommends that you backwash for 1 minute, then turn off the pump.

If you have the Slide Valve, you will put it back into the FILTER position and then turn the pump back on for 1 minute. If you have the Multiport Valve, you will put it in the RINSE position and then turn the pump back on for 1 minute.

Pentair recommends that you do this cycle a total of three times, backwash/rinse, backwash/rinse, backwash/rinse. AFTER the third time, you will need to open the Air Release Valve at the top of the filter while the pump is OFF and the valve position in back on FILTER. Once this is done, turn on the pump. When you have a steady stream of water coming out of the Air Release Valve, close that up. This way you have no air in the system.

Now, you will mix your DE "Slurry" in a bucket. Depending on your model of filter, you will measure out your DE and mix with water to the consistancy of milk. **IF it is just a backwash, you will only add 80% of the original amount of DE. You only add the total 100% of DE when you completely take the filter apart and clean it out.**

You will slowly pour the slurry into the skimmer that is closest to the pump. This will allow the DE to evenly coat the grids in the filter. Wait about 5 minutes and then check the pressure gauge on the filter. Once the PSI reaches 8 to 10 PSI above this number, it is time to backwash.
