it is without doubt blown head gaskit,or cracked block---a quicktest at radiator centre will confirm this only takes a couple of minutes

If you are changing the bottle then you may need to empty the cooling system,change the bottle and refill and make sure you add anything that is needed with it,(like anti freeze if applicable).Once new bottle fitted you will need to fill it with water and preferably from a hose...then you will need to make sure there is no air inside the system..This should solve your problem..

If you have a closed system (no cap on the radiator, fill cap is screw type on the tank) Yes it will cause an overheat.
It is possible to overheat due to a broken recovery bottle in a normal system but usually it takes a long time as very little coolant is lost and generally it can run with nothing in the bottle for a month or more without problems. In any case you can obtain one for either system very cheap at any local scrapyard.
