SOURCE: how to replace the havyward key/seal assembly

remove the screw holding the top to the body of the valve. Tap the pin out that holds the key assembly into the top. Note the direction of the handle to the key assembly before you do so...it matters how you align the new one.

Usually you reuse the spacer and o-ring on the old stem or else just install all your new parts. The hard part is compressing the top while leaving room to reinstall the pin. I use a vice and a big pair of channel locks and do it myself. Otherwise get someone to help you hold it compressed enough to punch in the pin and your all done.

SOURCE: using a hayward vari-flo valve model SP 710x32

Do not drain a vinyl liner pool mor than half way....ever... If you have a fiberglass, or gunite pool it is important to pull the hydrostatic plug under the main drain cover. If you live down a hill, or where there is a high water table, the water pressure underground can lift the empty pool out of the ground (more common in fiberglass pools). If you have a sand or DE filter switch the valve to waste. make sure that you have the skimmer turned off, and the pump is only sucking from the pool main drain (spa drain closed also), and turn the pump on. Make sure the waste hose is far enough away so you dont add any hydrostatic pressure.

It will not be glued, it is just stuck in there good. You will need to scrape, pull, twist or otherwise convince it to come out as best you can and then clean the area well before installing the new one.

Installing vari flo top mount valve on hayward filter. Should the the two C clamps come together tightly when install is complete or should there be a gap on the ends? Example (-) vs ()

There is a gap at the ends; about 3/16 to 1/4" give or take. Just hand tighten them and if the valve leaks a little tighten them a little more at a time to avoid splitting the clamps by overtightening.

The model number you give is for the multi port valve. Did you need the valve manual or the filter manual? Go to haywardnet.com for their full line and manuals. Here is the link for the SP0714 valve at their site. It is in PDF format...

Ive got an older hayward vari flow that leaks out of the flange that bolts the valve to the tank, Ive been trying to get a new oring but all the pool people been getting me the wrong one, there all too...

Most hayward sand filters use a GMX600F or GMX600F-H o-ring.
If it is an older tank it might use the GMX400F which is smaller, and rare to come across. Most 400 Valves are not marked vari-flo.

Hope it helps.

Hayward vari flo valve

If the spider gasket in the vari-flo valve is no good, you will usually notice one of two problems.

1. Water leaking out backwash port while filter is operating.
2. Valve positions are really difficult to change.

The way to check this is if you are able to move one or two of the "spokes" in the gasket freely(out of the track it sits in) once the top of the valve is removed.

If so you need to replace. The gasket is usually held in with a silicone sealant. Once you remove the old gasket. You will need to scrape any remaining rubber from the track it sits in. I've found that a brass brush from a pluming supply store or home depot along with a flat head screwdriver is usually enough to do the removal.
I always used Permatex Blue RTV sealant on all valve jobs. It can be found at any auto parts store or sometimes Walmart. Follow the instructions for curing. Once cured the gasket is good as new.

I have a 7-11 vari-flo valve model sp 312, iam having trouble disconnecting it to change my sand

The newer models are held on with a collar, just unscrew the to two bolts holding the collar together and it should just lift off. Some just unscrew. You shouldn't have to open the valve what-so-ever. Dump the sand very slowly.

Problem with vari-flo multipoer 1.5 and Hayward DE fiilter

You need a rebuild kit for the valve and possible a sand change. Sand should be changed ever 3 - 5 years or so depending on overall pool conditions.

The gasket inside the valve is out of place and therefore allowing water to leak out the waste port. Use a gokit to replace all the gasket/orings and you should stop the leak.

If the flow is still bad, inspect the sand and change it if necessary.
