12 hp briggs backfires doesn't start

This could be a result of several different things, however the most common of these would be a sheered flywheel key. If this is the case it has throwed the motor out of time and is trying to fire while the exhaust valve is open causing the backfire and lack of compression to start. I hope this has helped.

Swisher 60" pull behind mower with 14.5 briggs engine. good spark and the starter will crank just fine. If I prime the carb with a little gas it will start imediately but wont continue. Any ideas..

Hi Andy, the carby will need to be removed and all jets cleaned out with compressed air. Basically its not getting enough fuel through the carby to keep running. Regards Phil.

Briggs and straton 5 horsepower overhead valve lawnmower 1978 is backfiring through carborator

Remove the top engine cover and check that the aluminum flywheel key is not sheared, then remove the valve cover and ADJUST the 2 overhead valves. They have to be adjusted periodically on ALL small engines with overhead valves.

Started using oil and smoking severely, all at once .

the best compression for a B&S is between 50 psi and 60 psi. if it's below 40 psi there is a problem with the rings or the tappet clearance (not letting the valves close all the way) but if it's smoking i would start with the rings...good luck

Briggs and Stratton OHV V-Twin 24hp repetitive valve adjustment

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.
