Cooling is poor For an overall understanding of how refrigerators should work, read about refrigerators in the How Things Work section of our website. A refrigerator or freezer that is cooling, but cooling poorly, may have a problem in one of several areas:

Evaporator coils
Condenser
Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils or a condenser that is clogged with dust, lint, and dirt.

Evaporator coils Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets.

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited.

Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system:

  • The defrost timer

  • The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch)

  • The defrost heater

If it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level or the compressor. You may need to consult with a qualified appliance repair technician to further diagnose the problem

Condenser Self-defrosting refrigerators all have a set of coils and a cooling fan, usually under the refrigerator, that need to be cleaned regularly. If these coils get coated with dust, dirt or lint, the refrigerator may not cool properly. The coils may appear to be a thin, black, wide radiator-like device behind the lower kick-panel. To clean them, disconnect the refrigerator from the power source, use a refrigerator condenser brush (see the Appliance Accessories section) and your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils of any lint, pet hair, etc. You may not be able to get to all of the condenser from the front, it may be necessary to clean the remainder of the condenser from the rear of the refrigerator.

if this helps please vote me a fix ya

SOURCE: maytag refrigerator side-by-side model MSD2756GE

remove the baskets and shelves in the freezer and remove the rear panels after shutting the fridge down. If you see heavy frost on the coils then the defrost model needs replaced. If not, check the that the fans runs, and then that the thermostat works and then that the damper that allows the air to the fridge compartment is opening correctly.

If refrigerator is still cooling, but not real cold, could it just use freeon or motor replaced? I paid almost $1,000 on it in 2005. My husband tells me refrigerators are generally made to last 10 years....

Ok
How is the freezer? Everything frozen solid?or is that warm too?\
If freezer seems good ,then you 're gonna be ok.Meaning your compressor is fine , and there is a refrigerant charge. In this case ,you probably have a defrost problem where refrigerator section gets really warm but freezer still works "ok".This is a very common problem.Get us a model # and we can narrow down what it might be.Don't throw away the machine.Easily fixed.

If freezer is not freezing well but there is still refrigeration, the compressor is still probably ok,but there is some inefficiency going on.Most comonly condenser fan off or very dirty condenser coils or bad door seal leak or thermostat system keeps shutting machine off too much.A refrigerant leak would be terminal and you would have 0 refrigeration .

Much to ponder
Repost with more info if you need more help

Hope thi makes you feel better

My refrigerator Kenmore coldspot type 25SSA it work but no cold in both side.

Most likely the compressor is out of refrigerant gas. This can happen a little at a time or get a big leak and happen all at once. This is a job for a licensed refrigeration contractor.

I have a side by side and the refrigerator side is warm. Freezer side is working but other side is on 9 and still warm. Can this be fixed?

This is not a problem it is normal according to the manual. A pair of heat transfer pipes are installed
in the front corners of the refrigerator to
dissipate heat generated during the
refrigeration process.

Refrigerator not working, freezer works great

Yes, only one compressor. The refrigeration system actually only cools the freezer. Then there is a vent from the freezer to the refrigerator that allows the cold air to circulate to the refrigerator side. That little dial you turn to set the refrigerator temperature is actually only open or closing that vent. The dial for the freezer temperature is an actual thermostat that operates the compressor.

The temperature of the freezer should be between 0 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is in or near this range and the refrigerator is only at 55 degrees (the refrig should be at 38 to 45 degrees) then check for blockage or icing where the air from the freezer circulates into the refrigerator.

If the freezer is not in or near the 0 to -10 degrees then you have a refrigeration problem. First thing to do is clean the condenser coil on the bottom of the unit using rags and a shop-vac. Be careful of the wiring and tubing down there plus the sharp metal.
Unplug the unit before cleaning.

Otherwise, you'll need to call a refrigerator service technician to repair the refrigeration system for you.

If this helps you, please select YES to one of the first two ratings questions. Thank you, and Good Luck.

Side by side Kenmore fridge

These areas are where the thermal break is made between the inside and outside temperatures to prevent humidity from condensing on the surfaces. They are called mullion heaters. If you have an energy saver switch turn it on and it will reduce the heating effect. If the temperatures on the inside of the refrigerator and freezer are elevated this will be noticed more so.

Kenmore cold spot refrigerator freezer

I would look to the condenser where the heat is removed from the refrigeration system for your problem. Check and make sure the condenser fan operates, check the compressor for operation. If the condenser is plugged with dust it will cause the compressor to cycle on its thermal overload protector. Normally in back there is a removable panel to access the condenser and compressor area. make sure you reinstall the cover after you are done. It is critical to proper operation and cooling of the system.

Kenmore 253.54622406 Problem

I have had the experience of Moisture in the refrigeration system with some of this brand. If this is your problem it will require a refrigeration tech to recover the charge from the system, change the system drier, evacuate the system to remove air and moisture, then recharge the system with the proper refrigerant.
If your refrigerator is covered by warranty your cost should be minimal. If it is not covered by warranty it can be somewhat expensive. If it is a problem with the defrost system you will see frost build-up on the back freezer wall.
