You will need some kind of power converter device, that changes the french power to that of the english one. Have a look on Amazon.

Nonsense - French and British mains power are no different. Changing the plug or using an adaptor is all that is required - no need for voltage conversion. If it worked in France but not in the UK, something else is wrong. Need more detail;s to give assistance.

CDJ 200 meant for US mains supply plugged directly into UK mains supply, now don't work. Replaced external fuse but still don't work..anything else i can try before i bin it?

Dont bin it!!!
If you are really lucky it may have just blown an internal fuse or if your not so lucky it may have killed the mains transformer which is still worth repairing.
If the transformer is faulty and was replaced with one sourced from Pioneer GB then no external 240V to 110V transformer would be needed - you would be able to plug it straight into a UK mains supply.

Philco american stereo system

Well since we in the UK use 240 volts and over the sea they use 120 volts, it should be no surprise why it no longer works. What the effect is couldn't be any clearer. Since most units only use around 30 volts to work, a transformer is employed to knock the mains down. These have what is known as a primary winding, this takes the mains, however the coil of wire will be designed for the mains it is going to be connected with. If it is connected to one greater they tend to burnt out. Often transformers have fuses built. However they don't tend to be replacable. So you will almost for certain need a new transformer. If you are really lucky a fuse might have been employed in the power leads going to the transformer. As long as it wasn't rated a 250 volts it could have gone and transformer is OK. BUT I WOULDN'T BANK ON IT!
Now you have an option, you could replace the transformer with the same type (which you would need to do for safety reasons) or you can get a very experinced technical person, to replace the transformer with one that will meet safety standards and have a 250 volt primary, for the UK. You can even get them that have two mains, one 250 and one 120!
If you just go for the replacement then you will still need a mains adapter.
PS There might be other damage, such as the mains switch!

US portastudio 2488: Can it play when connected with a transformer

The 2488mkII manual specifies that the unit can operate with either 120VAC, 60Hz (USA/Canada), 230VAC, 50Hz (U.K./Europe), 240VAC, 50Hz (Australia) so you should be fine with a transformer which can accomodate 230VAC, 50Hz).

I have actually conversed with people who have been using the 2488 in France without any power problems.

Cheers,

bd.
