I have a Maxtor HD as described above.
It has 4 Bad Sectors on it.
I have tried to repair same earlier, using the DOS version of Maxblast, but it does not last.
One of my backup programs will not back up to a drive with Bad Sectors on it.
How do I find out whether it is still under warranty ?
Many Thanks for any assistance.
I had a similar problem a month ago.
Go to the Seagate site(They own Maxtor now)
Click on the Customer Service and support link, then the warranty link.
Supply the serial number and they'll give you the warranty info.
I got an RMA number from the site, and received my (Refurbished) drive in about 10 days. They supplied a box to return the original drive, and I apid the postage.
A very quick, easy and satisfactory exchange.

do you have a recovery disk for the internal hard drive? this is the disk that came with pc.your internal HD is important this have been wiped (you have no OS) . get your internal back in order........do you have a receipt that says you purchased a 300gb (not 3gb) take it back get your money or the right external... once you are able to use the pc double check the external hard drive
The USB Isn,t supplying/providing enough Power to the device.
Search e-bay or similar for a 2 into 1 USB Cable.
Then power the unit with 2 USB Ports on the Computer.
2 x USB Into 2 x Sockets On P.C. 1 x Into Device Drive.
This will be enough power to operate the Device Correctly.
I,ve done this on several external Drives, never failed for Me.
The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.
