SOURCE: internet access with wireless
Assuming that your laptop has a built-in WiFi Networking card (or even a USB or PCMCIA WiFi adapter), normally its a matter of setting your Network configuration to "Auto obtain IP address automatically". This could be done in your Control Panel/Networking Connections, right click on your wireless Networking, click on Properties, highlight Internet protocol (TCP/IP), click on the Properties button and tick "Obtain...".
In some instances you might need to key in the WEP or WPA security key if it has been enabled and set in your WiFi router, though it has been known to slow down connections. If on the otherhand the router has its MAC filter enabled, then you would need to add your laptop's WiFi MAC numbers to the list that the router would allow access to.
Should the above be not corrective of your concern, pls post back with the make & model of your router, laptop, and the WiFi adapter if external/add-on. Knowing your Operating System would also help.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.

I have had the same problem. If yours is like mine you will be able to access internet via the wired LAN connection, but the wireless card will completely have disappeared from device manager and the hp wireless assistant.
Are you aware that this is a known fault with the hp dv6000 series laptops? I bought mine in Dec 2006 and had it repaired for this fault, within warranty, about 11 months later. Since then I have noticed hp has extended the standard warranty for an extra year BUT ONLY for this particular problem. If you search for your model on the hp website it will tell you (by serial number) if your model qualifies for this special extended warranty program.
It doesn't seem there is a pemanent fix for this fault, because hp replaced my wireless card AND motherboard the first time round, and I have just started experiencing the same fault again!! I am hoping hp will still repair mine, for a second time, as I am just within the two years. Note that another symptom listed under the same fault is: no or intermittent display on the screen, which I have just started also getting and is much more of a bummer - so I'd recommend you get yours fixed before that happens.
As to the cause - I have just taken mine to a repair shop in Tottenham Court Road for a 2nd opinion and they say they get dozens of these every week, some out of warranty. Apparently when hp switched from the intel to the nvidia chipset for the graphics it started happening. Basically the nvidia runs very hot and the laptop's fan can't cool it down fast enough. It has probably fried part of your motherboard affecting the wireless and if you're unlucky the display may be next to go.
The chap also mentioned that the heat also warps the tacky plastic they use for the buttons at the top of the keyboard so these sometimes malfunction as well. For instance, you might find applications randomly starting from the 'quick launch' pad without you doing anything.
The verdict: I wouldn't buy hp again. This has really put me off!

SOURCE: Won't let me install Java
Head to www.filehippo.com. Download the java installer from there and install it. If you still have trouble after this, remove ALL versions of java installed on your machine, restart the computer (even if the computer doesnt tell you to), then download and install the client.

Google chrome has over ridden IE8 - use google chrome to access mozilla.com and download firefox - alternative to IE8 - then after you've got it installed go to control pannel and uninstall google chrome.

Tips for a great answer:
Dec 09, 2013 | Toshiba Satellite Computers & Internet
Check the wireless router and high-speed modem.
If the two are not powered on, or if the Ethernet cable connected the two is not completely inserted into both connection ports, you are unable to access the Internet on the Acer Aspire One laptop computer.
Activate the wireless Internet connection on the laptop computer.
Right-click the wireless icon on the desktop, then choose "Enable" from the pop-up menu.
Without activating the wireless receiver on the Acer Aspire One, the laptop is unable to detect any wireless network.
Select the appropriate network you wish to connect to.
Your computer may be attempting to connect to a different Internet connection, preventing you from access the network you desire.
Right-click the wireless icon, select "Search for available wireless networks," then choose the network you want to access.
Restart the computer.
The system may have booted and failed to detect the wireless receiver.
Restarting the computer corrects this issue.
hope this helps
