Thank you Jeff S. for your solution of releasing my ext hard drive by merely changing the drive letter assigned to it - simple solution that did the trick immediately like you said. I am so appreciative. I have been looking for 3 days to find the proper solution - tried others that did not work - yours was great. Thank you so much!
The SATA hard drive did not have master/slave setting at the hard drive
if you want to make the hard drive as master just connect your hard drive to SATA 1 slot at Motherboard
and id you want to make the hard drive as slave just connect your hard drive to SATA 2 slot at *********** board
Please remove the usb cable and try to connect do you see the notification new hardware found if yes just check my computer dose the hard drive shows over there if yes and double click on it dose it open if yes and the hard drive is empty .
then go back right click on the hard drive check properties dose it show the empty and the full graphs if it shows full and dosnt show the drive letter.
then right click on the my computer icon on the desktop go to manage and diskmanage ment check the hard drive over ther dose it show its unformated or un initialized if no dose it have drive letter on it if no then right click on the drive and say change drive letter and assigned one letter like h or g and check in my computer now dose it appair.if still so try changing the usb cable may its defective.
if dosent detect at all could be your hard drive case so you can remove the hard drive from inside the case and connect it directly.in the computer if works backup your data abd return backthe hard drive in the case and if its still in gurentee return it to the service center.
The predicament you are in is called hard drive partioning (as long as anther hard drive hasnt been fitted in). Essentially you take one physical hard drive and you break it into 2 virtual drives thus the C and D, this is generally done to allow all system files to reside on the C drive and your personal files on the D drive
setup the original harddrive as master and the new one as slave then the drive that comes up as c will be the master and the others will follow suit and when you install the games just change it in the install
if your hdd still have sticker from factory ( on top the silver side you can see MAXTOR brand) there is small information you can change "jumper" small plastic. you can find instruction MS(master),SL(slave) or CL(Cable Select) so look at the back oh hard drive you'll find a small plastic (one)..take it out and change like the instruction sticker
Re: deleting the files, did you drag the files into the trash bin and then empty it? The files don't actually leave your drive until you 'Empty Trash' on your mac's doc. Hope this helps, not sure about your startup disc problem.
