SOURCE: no internet when using router

Your modem has already registered itself with the MAC address of your computer, so it doesn't recognize the MAC of your router. In cases like this you have two options:

  1. Configure your router to clone the MAC of your computer
  2. Connect the router to your modem and do a soft reset so the modem registers itself with the MAC of your router.
Clone MAC - Go to your routers Admin web interface and on the main page you should see the "Router MAC Address" section at the bottom. Select "Use Computer MAC Address" and click "Apply" and your router should reboot and you'll be back in business.

Soft Reset
- Plug the modem into the router via the ethernet cable then do a soft reset.

To do a soft reset, do the following:
  1. pull the power cord from the modem
  2. count to 5
  3. hold down the Reset EMR button on the modem
  4. plug back in the power
  5. count to 30 while holding the Reset EMR button (the modem should be blinking a lot)
  6. release the Reset EMR button and see what happens.

SOURCE: ethernet vs. usb

FYI for those people trying to use a ethernet and usb cable from a cable modem - it may work for a while but it won't work forever - your ISP will only allow one IP address out of the modem unless you pay for additional addresses (then you need a switch). Each device you have on the modem is fighting for that IP and eventually it will just quit working (if it works at all).

If you want more than one computer on your network (on the Internet or sharing printers/files, etc) then you need a router or a gateway (cable modem/router combo which I DON'T recommend).

Magicjack will not dial out when hooked up with phone line modem & wifi??.. phone line filters are installed on all phones, still not working??..

Filters should not be fitted to the phone connected to the magicjack device.
You need a computer to register on line for the first time also connected to the same Wi-Fi as the magicjack.

The magicjack device must have external power on and plugged into the Ethernet connection on your modem/router.

Check you have an internet connection first, via your computer, or it will never work.

My Officejet wont print pdf files from my minimac (os 4.11) but prints fine from my pc running xp. Also my mac has lost ethernet connectivity, but the pc works fine. Any sugguestion how to fix?

This seems to be a single issue. The fact you cannot print to a presumably shared printer AND cannot access the network or Internet, would indicate your issue is simply connectivity related.
Are you connecting the Mac via wired ethernet cable or wireless?
If it is wired, check your connection via the network icon on your screen (usually upper left) Click on the icon and choose "Open Network Preferences". In the window that appears, check on the left side to see if the appropriate connection has a green, yellow or red dot next to it. If the dot is red, you are not connected. If the dot is yellow, you are connected but there is an issue.
If the connection is wired and there are other computers able to get online, then check the cable connected to the Mac or replace it.
If the connection is wireless, then check try reconnecting again and make sure you are using the right passphrase for your security requirements. You may need to delete the profile and recreate it. You can do this by clicking on the Wi-Fi item on the left panel of your Network preferences window and then clicking on Advanced button. In the following window that appears, find your wireless network name in the list under Preferred Networks and click on it to highlight it. Then click the - button to remove it. Then close the window and try reconnecting to the network from the icon on the bar at the top of your screen, using the correct network passphrase (if needed).
If this still does not work, think this through...
1. Is any other computer using wireless connection and having a similar connection issue?
2. Did this computer EVER connect to the network and Internet successfully?
If the answer to either question is yes, then the problem is likely your Router/Modem. power OFF the router (and modem if separate) for about 30 seconds and then power it ON. See if this resolves the connectivity issue. If not, consider doing a factory reset on the router/modem, but make sure you have the appropriate settings needed to configure the router and/or modem as these will likely be lost when you reset the devices and will be required to get connected to your Internet Service Provider.
If the answer to question 2 above is NO, then the problem is directly related to the mac. If you are trying to connect via wireless, try connecting with an ethernet cable instead to make sure the mac can connect that way.
If neither way seems to work, it may be possible there is a network configuration problem, defective router, or possible network conflict present and may require a more professional approach requiring a visit from a networking professional to resolve it.

Make sure the Modem is plugged into the correct port on the E1000 (far left port labelled 'internet' on a yellow background). Unplug all the devices power cables and restart them in order from the wall (modem - router - PC/MAC) make sure the modem has link and activity lights flashing, if there is a light for 'internet' wait for it to be on before plugging in the router. You might want to call your ISP and confirm theres nothing funky with the line/modem.

Followed all the set up steps but my DSL light would not stay on

  • 1 Plug the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on your wall. If you do not have Internet ports installed in your home, connect a phone line adapter to a phone line jack. The adapter makes the phone line wider so Ethernet cables can connect to it. This does not block your phone from use.
  • 2 Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back side of the Netgear DSL modem.
  • 3 Connect the Netgear DSL modem to a local power source. The power plug inserts into the modem via a small port on the rear of the modem.
  • 4 Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the modem. Run the cable to your computer and plug it into the Ethernet port on the computer.
  • 5 Look on the back end of the DSL modem for an HTTP: address. Type this into your Internet browser's search bar. The Netgear DSL modem menu appears on the screen.
  • 6 Select how many computers are to use the modem, if you are using it with other DSL modems and set up a password (the default username and password is "admin"). Click "OK" to initiate the changes you made to the menu. You can now use your Netgear DSL modem to connect to the Internet.

Sorry but that seems to be a pretty convoluted explanation. Here is how it should go.
Vonage unit connected to phone line(s) and cable modem. Linksys connected to Vonage box. Computers connected to Linksys.
Ethernet has a length limitation of about 300 feet before you need another switch (hub) or a repeater. Does your wire length exceed this?

it will as long as the modem/router is connected to a phone line, instead of the pc, the only cable connected to the pc should be a ethernet cable; or you have the pc networking set that it connects via another pc instead of through a gateway, re run the wireless network wizard.

    No internet when using router

Can this be used with a MAC?

Any router will work, TCP/IP is a network standard, definately double check the cables. Your DSL modem is usually 192.168.254.254. and the router is usually 192.168.1.1. Check your documentation for the default IP. Once you know it type it in to the broswer in your Mac. Before doing so connect with an ethernet cable, purchase a new one if necessary. Connect from the <--> labeled port on the mac, or ethernet port. These wires are not like phone lines, they have 8 wires instead of 4/6. The router usually has ports on the back labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, and WAN. the 1-4 ports are LAN and that is also labeled on there. Plug the mac into port 1 and any other computers in after you get internet. once the physical connection is recognized. Go to your browser in the mac and proceed. if you get a web based router configuration page your router is working, then make the WAN connection to the ethernet port on the back of the dsl mode. Be sure your cables are good. Also go to your control panel and make sure your internet is enabled in your network section.
