Brother mfc-420cn - fx problem

I have two lines through Vonage, one to my phone and one to my fax. Either lines will work on my phone. However, regardless of which line is connected to the fax, the sender gets a busy signal. It as if the Brother thinks it is connected. Pressing the "hook" button does not get rid of the busy signal. Powering off and back on does not get rid of the busy signal......Any suggestions?

orry the problem still exists. When I hit the "hook" button, the fax machine sounds like there is another device on the line open. No dial tone, just an open line. However, there are no other devices hooked to the line.

From the manual for your Brother model: To select or change your Receive mode 1. If it is not illuminated in green, press "Fax" (picture of Fax button) 2. Press - "Menu/Set, 0, 1." 3. Press - (up arrow) or (down arrow) to select "Fax Only". 4. Press - "Stop/Exit." This is just to select the "Fax Only" option, which is what you need - having a phone line strictly for the fax machine. There are 4 options on that setting, and the manual explains them in more detail. You can also set the "Ring Delay" for the fax by pressing "Menu/Set, 2, 1, 1." The options shown are "0, 1, 2, 3, or 4". It's very likely that you want to select an option OTHER than "0". This Brother manual for your model can be found at this URL: --> http://www.retrevo.com/search/fv/1d4caef84f3754461d7ce187341b923c.pdf#page=1 Hope this helps! You might be experiencing a problem with your phone line.

    But try this:

    - verify that it's set to tone dialing
    (Menu/Set, 0, 4)

    - Pick up and listen to the phone handset as you dial *51 and then #51. The *51 is a remote code instructing the machine to receive a fax, and the #51 is a remote code to tell it to return the phone signal to the handset. This might force it out of an "automatic connect", if it's locked into one.

    - Check to see if there are send/receive jobs waiting in memory, and delete any present.
    (Menu/Set, 2, 6)
(Press Menu/Set to select job & press 1 to cancel it.)

    - Set Compatibility to "Basic" to try eliminating phone line compatibility problems.
    (Menu/Set, 2, 0, 1)

If none of these solves the problem, let us know. We can keep searching for a solution that works. ;)

Fax problem

I want to make sure I understand this completely. You get no dial tone from the fax machine when hooked up to VOIP. In the past, was there an audible dial tone from the fax, or did it just dial silently and give you an error if there was no tone? When you said you got a dial tone by connecting a phone to the ext phone port of "the machine" did you mean the fax machine? If you get a dial tone by running a phone through the fax machine, then the line is good. I have used a fax machine over Sunrocket before they went defunct, which used the same technology base as Vonage - so it should work. If you used to get an audible dial tone when using the fax, and no longer do, and you are geting a dial tone on a regular phone that is connected to the ext. port of the fax machine, then the problem has to be in the fax machine itself, not the VOIP. If you can verify that, we can go from there.

My Brother mfc-7220 will not accept a fax.

Make sure the phone line is plugged into the LINE port of your machine.

Fax machines will not work reliably on a Cable Phone Line such as VONAGE.

You should have an ANALOG phone line.

Brother MFC-8440, send fax ok, but no receiving fax

Hi,

The manual has step by step instructions, I'll include a link for the online version. Section four runs through setting up recieving, if it's on a dedicated line follow the first set of instructions to set up automated answering. If it's a shared line(phone/fax) then continue down to the next section.

Note: for a shared line you may need to contact your line provider for a second number that has a "dedicated ring"

Can't Send or Receive Faxes from MFC-7820 N

You may not need a separate fax line from Vonage. If you don't need a dedicated fax line, you can try changing the "Bandwidth Saver" settings on your Vonage voice line from your account on the Vonage website. Perform the following:

1. Login to your Vonage account online and click the "Features" tab.
2. Scroll down to the "Bandwidth Saver" link and click on the "Configure" button.
3. You will see a scrollbar with 3 settings: 30kbps, 50kbps and 90kbps

NOTE: My "Saver" was set to 90kbps (Highest Sound Quality) by default.

4. Click on 30kbps (Normal) and click "Submit".
5. Wait about an hour before testing as it could take that long for the change to take effect.
6. Send a test fax to the HP fax test service at 1-888-hpfaxme (1-888-473-2963).

NOTE: This is a GREAT service provided by HP. If your fax goes through correctly, you will receive a return fax within five minutes.

We upgraded to Verizon FiOS and never thought the increased upload speed (4mbps) would present an issue sending faxes. WRONG. We never had fax issues with DSL, Comcast or even Broadstripe VOIP service but for some reason Vonage + FiOS = no fax. That is until we set our Vonage VOIP sound quality to "Normal". Our phone voice quality has been much more reliable since throttling back. This sentiment has also been shared by other Vonage users who have experienced echoing and noise when utilizing the higher quality settings.

Your phone coversations may not have FM quality sound but they will have AM quality and usually that is just fine.

If your fax machine has a Telephone Answering Device (TAD) setting, you can share your voice line with your fax machine and be able to receive faxes and voice messages. Hopefully this will work for you.

Did you choose the right input for fax? Or did you connect to the phone line in at the mfc? Did you choose the right settings? See handbook for that.
