How Do Cheetahs Survive?
A cheetah survives on hunting prey, mostly hoofed animals. Its body is light and lean, allowing it to chase its prey to speeds of up to 70 mph. Its coat of fur is brown and covered in dark spots. This acts as camouflage because it blends in with the savannah plantation ensuring that it is not visible to its prey. This makes it easier to sneak up on its prey and kill it.
The cheetah is a carnivore, eating mostly mammals under 40 kg (88 lb), including the Thomson's gazelle, the Grant's gazelle, the springbok and the impala. The young of larger mammals such as wildebeests and zebras are taken at times, and adults too, when cheetahs hunt in groups. Guineafowl and hares are also prey.
