Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

1 Answer

Kohler cv491s Motor won't start. I replaced the fuel filter. Cleaned the air filter. Poured a fair amount of gas in the carb, opened the thottle to allow the fuel to enter into the bowl. Started the engine and it ran normally for about 30 seconds and then died. I have done this several times with the same result. Could I have a problem with the fuel pump. Would a fuel pump kit resolve this problem?

It could be fuel pump or carburetor. Make sure tank valve is open (if equipped), remove fuel line from carb and carefully have someone turn engine over, if you get a good stream coming from line you know pump is good, then you know problem is in carburetor. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Craftsman GT5000 W/22hp B+S surges and dies when warm

Replace the spark-plug, check the quality of the fuel(gas that is mixed or was stored more then three months is stale and wont fire correctly) make sure the fuel and air filter not clogged. If there is no change then your problem may be more technical, a nest may be restricting the govenor or you missed something with the carb and there still is debre causing it to stall.

Try removing fuel bowl under carb and cleaning it. Junk and condensation can collect there. I had same problem. Did that and problem fixed.

SOURCE: Popping out exhaust, loss of power, wont run at full throttle.

I had the same problem. If it is a 2 cylinder, remove the valve covers. On one side, the rocker arm had slipped off of the push rod. It was real loose. Put the rocker arm back on the push rod and tighten it down. I think this will do the trick.

Echo PB 251 won't run. replaced plug, gas, fuel filter, air filter. took carb a part, and cleaned with carb cleaner, used the compressed cleaner to clean out venturis/ports.

Wow! with all you have done it should run. Be sure the switch is on but if you are getting spark, it should be on. I would take it to the echo place for service.

Sounds like the carb is varnished up and needs to be rebuilt. They make rebuild kits depending on the carb number and you can rebuild it.

My cutoff saw won't start, compression is good, has oil/gas mix, gets spark from wire but sparkplug was dirty so i cleaned it and she still won't turn over

If the saw briefly runs when you prime the carb and/or cylinder with gas then most likely fuel is not getting thru the carb. Try rebuilding the carb and replacing the fuel filter first. You can also search on youtube and google for troubleshooting tips.

I had this problem with my Rover Mower a while ago. It nearly drove me mad trying to figure it out. And then I did the only thing I hadn't done so far. I cleaned out the fuel tank. And sure enough, there was a fair amount of gunk in it. And I also cleaned out the filters while I was going...no problems ever since

I have a John Deere LT133 w/13hp Kohler motor. Problem

I had the same mower in my shop with the same prob. Last week, here is what i did to correct the problem, take the fuel line apart at the fuel filter, open the fuel cap and drain the gas from the tank, once it stops i took couple old walmart bags and compressed air to slowly blow air in to the tank to blow the residue and trash out of the fuel tank. Next using compressed air to blow through the fuel line from where the filter was toward the carb. Next unbolt the carb and remove the fuel bowl, take the small pin holding the float out and slowly remove the float pulling strait up as the needle will be attached via a small channel on the float. There is where you will find the seat which the needle you extracted sets in to stop or allow the fuel to flow. Clean these parts and area WELL. i usually take the air screws out and use carb cleaner to clean those areas as well. Reinstall the needle and float, pin assembly and the bowl. Reinstall the carb , and make SURE to install a new fuel filter not exceeding the last filters micron flow, double check all connections, clamps, and hardware, add new FRESH gasoline with no less than 89 octane at any time, engine should fire and run as intended.
