Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower

1 Answer

Broken Flywheel? I have a yard machine push mower but I can't start it. I depress the safety bar and pull the cord. Seems like the flywheel spins, but the engine doesn't even try to fire. Doesn't feel like blades move either when cord is pulled. Any ideas?

Blades spin. Spark plug is good as it works in another mower. No spark. Pulled the kill switch and tried again. Nothing.

If you have aspare flywheel take the old one off take hood off and then take the nut out off the center of the old flywheel and push the break in so the flywheel dosent magitize to the coil once you do that take olld flywheel off but make shure you dont forget that little key goes in the grove when you put the new flywheel on also make shure that key is as close to the top as you can get it the tighten down ne flywheel put your hood back on and it will start just fine

SOURCE: Flywheel moves then stops

if the engine only turns half a turn or so and feels like it hits something solid my guess is a broken conrod inside the motor(check your oil level??) dismantle engine to inspect damage

From what you describe it sounds like the line may be tangled, remove the rewind housing in order to inspect the line up close.

SOURCE: 22" Yard Machine Push Mower: how long should i make my pull cord when i replace...

long enough that when you pull it you don't hit feel it come to the end of the rope. Short enough that it winds all the way up.
When I replace these things I use a little more than an arms length. 3 foot or so. I wind the spring till it is tight then slide a screw driver through the top to hold the wheel so I can thread the cord and knot it. Then I let it wind itself up until it stops and then add handle and pull just enough tension on it to tie the knot in the handle and make sure it pulls the handle snug to the housing.

Check to make sure your blade is not bent first take the spark plug out for safety then by turning the mower over on its side. Now turn the blade and determine if the blade is rubbing the deck or if the sound is in the engine if it is in the engine it will probably be a bent crankshaft. If it is the blade bend it back to 180 degrees perpendicular to the crankshaft. If it is the crankshaft. it will be a costly repair that could cost more than the original cost of the mower. Buy a used one at a garage sale, yardsale or other source make sure to test any used product before buying.

I have a Yard Machines/ Briggs & Stratton 675 series 190cc lawn mower. It started this morning then stopped. I replaced the spark plug now the pull/start cord won't pull, what could be the problem.

CHECK THE OIL. If oil level gets too low, the engine may seize due to excessive friction. Check the safety interlock cable for proper operation. Check under the mower for anything that may prevent the blade from turning. If the mower hit something hard like a stump, tree root, or a large stone then check the woodruff key where the flywheel slides onto the crankshaft (there is a notch in both the flywheel and the crankshaft where this key fits). If the notches are misaligned, then the key is sheared. If the key is sheared, remove the flywheel, replace the key, reinstall the flywheel.

My mtd(11A-54MC552) lawnmower won't start. changed: spark plug, fresh gas, clean air filter,

The Flywheel has a brake and switch assembly on that is item 8 of this link:

The switch is made or unmade by the position of the user safety bar on the handle. When the cable between the handle and the flywheel safety brake wears or needs adjustment the safety switch continually grounds the ignition so there is no spark. You may have to adjust the user safety bar cable at the engine flywheel brake switch area by losending the mount screw and moving the cable jacket further away from the switch. Then re-tighten the mounting screw.

If this is the first start of the season you may have to remove the carb float bowl as shown on the bottom of item 14 the above link to clean out the jet orifice in the threaded area of the carb. Make sure you remove all debris in the carb float bowl area. You should also have fuel flow anytime the float is positioned below horizontal.

If none of the above corrects the problem respond here and I will help you.

Lawn mover will not start, was flipped over

The clicking noise may be the blade hitting the side of the mower or it was not put on properly. It needs a balance to the aluminum flywheel on top of the engine. The blade adapter and blade provide this balance for the engine to run.
Good Day.

Bent the blade now it pulls back when trying to pull it to start

first put new blade on. if it still pulls back change the keyway , it has bent it causing it to be out of time. it kind of easy to do just don't beat the treads up on the flywheel while tapping on it and prying up with a pry bar. i use spray to loosen the flywheel. let it soak about 15 min. happy mowing sawdust46
