Grey to me tells me that the screens back light(s) are most likely functional but video graphics is not, i.e. doing what it's supposed to, i.e. paint/render images to the screen, could just be a loose connector. If you can, try connecting an external monitor if possible, reason to try and pinpoint if screen or cable to back of screen but under the lids front and back cover OR the video graphics driver. Hope that resolves it or at least put you on the right track.
