Laptop doesn't see my dvd/cd drive (by 2 users)

Model number sd-c2732 on a Compaq nc6120 running XP Pro. Computer doesn't see drive, I have uninstalled the driver and re-installed it, I have also physically removed the drive. Use to work but no longer, nothing done to the computer that I no of. Wife uses it.

WizMost probably the drive is broken and needs to B replaced if you have done all that and it's still not going... Occam's Razor..
The lasers or quadrant detectors get burn out all too frequently I have found.
