NO,If you can get to the three phillips screws directly over the vent door then you do not have to take the unit down. Unplug the unit. Remove the top three screws over the center of the louvre and then carefully lower the vent louvre. (Lowering helps me get a better grip on the louvre assembly. Then you will slide the vent louvre assembly about 1/8" to the left and then it will pull straight back and out. In the center is an aluminum cover which has a phillips screw facing you. Remove this screw and the cover plate. The light bulb is directly to the left of the inside of the cover plate. You will see the metal tabs which hold it in place. Pull the bulb housing assembly straight out (to your right) as you face the microwave. Then you will locate your halogen 120V 20W bulb. I just received this from a fellow guest on fix it and I was able to fix my unit 10 mintes ago. Also another tip was to take the inside glass out when reinserting the bulb unit back in because it does get in the way. Good Luck

I found it helpful to remove the glass lamp cover (inside the oven) because the plastic cover plate arms protrude into the area where you are attempting to remove the lamp assy.

Also, the lamp assy has a plug connecting the power to the lamp which must be disconnected to remove the lamp. When this is unplugged there is no shock hazard associated with removing the lamp assy. - eliminating the need to turn off the power to effect the repair. General safety would still be removal of AC power to the micriwave.

The bulb..get it from Home Depot, ~ $5. Just replaced my bulb -too easy when you follow the previous post of instructions. Finally, the bulb has two pins - it does not/not screw out from the housing unit - plugs in.

Sadly, it looks like it. Some manufacturers are apparently making it this wayy to reduce their liability in case the customer gets cut or shocked. You can find helpful exploded view diagrams by selecting the option to look up repair parts here: http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prts/ The halogen bulbs must not be touched by bare hands. The oils from your skin will shorten their life.

One more thing: Safety dictates that you unplug the oven from the wall before disassembly and consider this a two-person job. Be safe.

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

GE Spacemaker Micro/Oven Need to change (inside) light bulb on model #JVM1490SH02 Serial # TH901044K. Where is the bulb located?

While replacing the cooktop light can be done by accessing the cover on the bottom of the oven, replacing the cavity light will require you to pull the oven from the wall and remove the outer cover.

The installation instructions are very handy in this case, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

If the holder cannot be twisted & pulled from inside the cooking cavity, it may have a lock inside the oven.

If that's the case, it will require you to remove the oven from the wall and remove the outer cover.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

GE profile spacemaker XL1800 undercabinet microwave - how do you change the 2 lightbults under the microwave. I can't get the bulbs out.

There are several screws on the bottom panel that can be removed. After you remove them, the metal plate can be removed or just lowered at an angle. Using a flashlight, you will see the two bulbs that probably need replacing. Pull the wire down, and they can be easily removed and replaced.
Hope this helps.

Replacing interior light bulb for ge spacemaker xl1800

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top to check if you can access the bulb fromthere. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.
you may have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy,
Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H Torx type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

hope this helps dont forget to rate this

That model number doesn't look quite right, but nevertheless:

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner's manual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

On these models, the oven must be pulled from the wall mount, then the outer cover must be removed. This is apparently to limit the manufacturer's liability. Removing the microwave from the wall is really a two-person job, since it is heavy and awkward. You don't want it to fall or slip, and the edges can be sharp. It helps a lot if you saved the original installation instructions. Once the oven is out of the wall, you can then access the lamp socket. These bulbs are special halogen types that must not be touched by bare hands, since skin oils will shorten their life.
