How to Delete Temporary Files and Delete Prefetch Files from my Computer?

Windows does provide a clean-up tool but there are better and quicker programmes available.

I have been using the free version of CCleaner for several years and find it an adequate way of keeping the junk down to a manageable level. If you can afford to buy software the pro version offers some really useful services.

Tip

Tuneup utilities prefetch data deleted windows 7 slow

Basically, the prefetcher is a Windows component that speeds up the boot process and start times of programs by prefetching data.

I recommend you never delete the prefetch data.

If you or another program delete prefetch data or the folder, this can slow the computer down until the prefetch data is rebuilt. Windows rebuilds this each time on reboot and during program start ups.

If you are using a cleanup utility, turn off any options that delete prefetch data. In CCleaner, this option is unchecked automatically. TuneUp 10 does not have an option for prefetch data and does not seem to delete this data. You may receive a message when using the program that states, "prefetch data deleted" which is informing you the prefetch is empty.

Tip

Winxp Applications Startup Time, Decrease your Applications startup time...

By default, Microsoft includes the /prefetch:1 switch to speed up it's Windows Media Player application start time. This switch can be used for other Windows applications and also many third party programs.

Example #1

You have AOL installed on the computer. Complete the steps outlined below to add the /prefetch:1 switch to AOL's Target path.

1. Right Click on the AOL shortcut and select properties from the menu.

2. In the Target: Field add the /prefetch:1 switch to the very end of the path, like this: "C:\Program Files\America Online 8.0\aol.exe" /prefetch:1 and then click ok.

Now start AOL. It would load at least 50 times faster than ever before.

Example #2

1. Go to the Start butoon/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools

2. Right Click on System Restore and select properties from the menu that appears. Add the /prefetch:1 to the Target Path entry so it look like this
%ystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe /prefetch:1 and Click ok.

Now System Restore will start immediately when executed.

Note: This switch will only work with some programs. Others will return a message saying the programs. Others will return a message saying the program in the target box is invalid. Just remove the switch.

Good luck!

I dont konw how to turn off deleting prefatch data in tuneup utilties 2011

Hello,

TuneUp utilities does not seem to have an option to delete prefetch data, however, you can view all settings in the options menu.

What you may be seeing is simply a notification within TuneUp Utilities that the prefetch data was deleted either by another program or mistakenly by you.

The prefetcher in Windows basically speeds up the computer boot process and start up program speeds. Windows will rebuild this information automatically on each reboot and program start up, so, over time, you will see the problem corrected.

Hi I have win 7, CCleaner, kaspersky 2011 & tuneup utility 2011 the tuneup says "prefetch data deleted" pls help me how to troubleshoot this problem

It is absolutely safe to delete the Prefetch Data. Each time you turn on your computer, Windows keeps track of the way your computer starts and which programs you commonly opened. Windows saves this information as a number of small files in the prefetch folder. The next time you turn on your computer, Windows refers to these files to help speed the start-up process. You may also change the setting of Tuneup Utility not to clear the prefetch data. Rest assure that it is safe either way and doesnt have much impact on high speed systems.

Let me know if any further clarification is required.

Good Luck!
Dont forget to appreciate the solution if I could have been of any help!

Speed of my computer is very poor

There are many reason for a computer to be slow.
I can give you a number of options to make it run faster.

First, You can delete the temp files from your computer.
Click on start > go to Run/Start SEarch > type 'temp' then hit enter
you'll be directed to the Temp Folder and you can delete all the files fro the folder, also you can try to type 'prefetch' to access the prefetch folder and do the same thing.

Second, you can stop programs from starting up when your computer starts.
Click on start> go to Run/Start search > type 'msconfig' > click start up tab .> then click Disabled All button > click on apply
then restart the computer.

You shold be able to notice a difference on the speed of your computer. If it is still the same speed. Try to consider adding additional memory (RAM) for beter performance.

Speed

Actually there are many reasons why your computer will boot up slow. I can only give you some tips.

Click start>run>type msconfig. On the startup tab uncheck any program that you don't need on startup.

Delete Prefetch files. Prefetch files are being created by windows when you open a program so thaht the next time you open the program it will pull up faster. But having too much prefetch helps slow your computer down on startup because it loads on startup. to delete go to start>run> type prefetch. delete all that you will see there.

For trojan problems the best way to remove them is by running a scan of updated antivurus program. If you don't have one. try SuperAntispyware. it worked for me. =)
