Older Amana upright freezer, I think that is 18 cu ft in size. It started making a clicking noise....I assume when the compressor is trying to start, it sounds like it is trying to start, but cannot
Hi, the clicking you are hearing is the compressor overload/external overload. When your compressor is a burn out or you have a locked rotor which means the compressor has died on you, it gets very hot from trying to start and this relay which is tied into the common side of the common terminal on the compressor, will click on and off as the unit tries to start. I have repaired these units for years and know exactly what is going on and the unit is older as you say. I would suggest pricing a new box as changing out the compressor, you are looking at around $1800.00 and up. I hate to tell you this but this is the problem. If you want to confirm this, just pull the unit out from the wall and try to leave it plugged in. Remove the lower panel to excess the compressor, condenser fan motor, and coil. Just be careful as this compressor should be very, very hot when you put your hand on it. Then you will know that is the problem. It should be warm and running. Please keep me posted and I hope I have been of help to you. Didn't want to give you the bad news though.
Good Luck, and Sincerely,
