Ambient air temp sensor

When I check main ambient temp sensor reading in system diagnostic mode it shows 84F, at the same time UI ambient temp sensor reads 72F, and the room temp is around 72F. Where is this "main board sensor" located? I suspect that due to this reading compressor and condenser fan are on practically all the time.

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

Your unit has so many electrical controls and components. In the future remember simple is better and more reliable.

First, your control boards. You have two control boards in your unit. In this case you should have a surge protector for all of your appliances with control boards. You can purchase a single socket surge protector for about $25.00 USD.

When you changed out the one board did you ground yourself by touching something that is bare metal? Static electricity will knock out a control board. You may have a power supply problem where the slightest change may knock out a board. This is why a surge protector is critical.

I had one customer that I had to replace the main control board 3 times in 18 months.

Ok, lets assume the boards are good and you have no shorts.

Lets check the oven wall thermal switch.

This switch is in the upper right corner of your oven back wall.
Disconnect the two leads to the switch. With your multi-meter, set it to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol). While depressing the red button, place one meter lead on one contact and the other meter lead on the other contact. You should get a reading of "0" Ohms if the switch is good, otherwise it is bad.

You have two separate motors. These motors may be locked in to continuous run.

On this motor, located under the top cover, under a small removable plate. It has a black contact switch. Remove the two electrical contactors. Using your multi-meter as described above, hold in the contact button. Your Ohms should be "0". The metal contacts may be fused.

This is located in the upper back section of you unit. It has a transformer. disconnect the two wire leads and Ohm them out to "0".


Remember, You still may have a control board problem. Ground yourself and check for burn marks or melted connections.

Running this unit @ such a low indoor & outdoor temp. is going to need an ambient controller. It acts like a rheostat to slow the speed of the condenser fan to keep the refrigerant pressures up so that it doesn't freeze like you're experiencing. The ambient controller can either tie into the refrigerant system reading pressure, or a surface mount thermistor sensor on the exiting condenser coil line to read temperature.

Hi Glenn, I'm glad to help! Here's how you check the Ambient Temp Sensor circuit itself to see if its working properly. Disconnect the Ambient Temp Sensor Connector. If the temp reading go to the default mode it will show 40 degrees. If it doesn't go to 40 Degrees then thyere something wrong with the system. Could be wiring or display itself. If it does go to 40 degrees then I'd try another sensor and see what happens. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Glenn.

Anything is possible on these vehicle's ,given all the electronic's . The first step in the diagnostic procedure would be to hook up a factory or professional type scanner an check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's in all the module's on the vehicle. At lest 10 on your vehicle .Looking at data for affected system's , testing power an ground circuits for the control module incharge of these system's .
Is the HVAC - climate control system automatic or manual ?

The following conditions must be met in order for the A/C compressor clutch to turn on:
• The ambient air temperature is above 4°C (40°F).

• B0159 is for the ambient air temperature sensor.

Taking your vehicle to a qualified repair shop mite be your best course of action .

Ambient temp sensor replacement


The ambient air temp sensor is located on the radiator support bracket at the top (see figure below, item 1)

Air conditioner will not come on. The tempeture gage is reading -40. The sensor is not reading properly.

The air conditioner may not work properly if your ambient temp is reading -40. The a/c control unit monitors ambient temp so that it does not operate at too low outside temps. I would recommend fixing the ambient temp sensor and rechecking your a/c operation.

Ambient air temp sensors. there are 2 located in front of radiator. why two? my display reads all sorts of temps..starts at approx correct temp and then may go all the way to minus 40 degrees. are the two...


The one in the air box has nothing to do with it ! There is only one Ambient air temp sensor Has gray with red trace wire & lite blue with orange trace wire . What color wire's to other sensor ?
Showing - 40 , sensor is bad or return signal wire is shorting .

Air temp indicator only reads temps below 50 degrees


Ambient air temp sensor could be the cause. Normally located in front grille area.

Clean the outside and inside coils and filter. This could be an air flow problem

Engine miss when ambient air temp increases not water/engine temp


there is an ambient temp. sensor in the intake air ducting, if its a small round two wire plug you can unplug it and the computer will think its -40C. You will set a code when you do this, but should go away after you plug it back in.
Depending on the engine you could have a cracked mainshaft in your distributor which is quite common, unfortunately most cracks are on the underside of the shaft which requires removing the distributor.

Misreading outside temperature sensor on 2001 Audi A4


There are four sensors for ambient tempurature and they work in unison to provide information to the temp reading on the dash, the heater control head ( where to direct air, blending of warm/cold/outside/inside air flapper controls) depending on the ambient temp and the inside air temp sensor located just above the radio as well as the sun sensor on the top of the dash as well as the a/c compressor head.

When you start your car, the body control module takes the readings from all sensors, outside air temp located in front of the radiator, air temp sensor located in the airbox ( senses temp of air being drawn in from the outside into the air box), coolant temp, inside air temp sensor and the sun sensor on top of the dash (this is why it takes a few seconds for the climate control system to begine when you start the car). The intake air sensor is 1st priority, inside air second, coolant third, ambient 4th and sun 5th. For instance, if the sun sensor reads the sun is hot but the interior sensor reads cold, the inside akes priority. The goal is for the system to achieve a tempurature inside the car that matches the selected temp. It uses all of the sensors to set the system up to achieve that goal as quickly as possible.

Example; Its mid afternoon, sunny and 40 degrees outside adn your in stop and go traffic. The intake sensor reads 40 degrees, the outside sensor reads 60 degrees (heat from radiator...engine heat protrudes into cabin) and the sun sensor reads high (sun is strong). The system is set for 72. priority one sensor reads 40, inside sensor reads 65, ambient reads 60= system will blow hot air to the floor out put, dash outlets will lightly flow 65 degree air so the sun doesnt roast you yet your feet are cold(if it blew hot air from all outlets, your upper body would be hot but your legs/feet would be cold). as the interior sensor reaches desired temp, air will be distrubuted through thee dash, defrost and floor with the warmest air coming out the floor and defrost, coolest air out the dash vents. Its a complex system!

The two sensors that will screw the system up the most are the intake and interior sensors. the system will function reasonably well with just those two sensors though it wont blend air temps between outlets if the sun sensor isnt working. If the outside sensor fails, it simply uses the intake sensor, if the intake sensor fails it will rely on the front sensor. However, since the intake takes priority over the outside sensor, if the intake sensor sends incorrect resistance info rather than failing, it will take priority and cause the unit to malfunction such as in your case.

The intake air sensor can be changed from the outside with patience. If it where me, I would pay the two hrs labor and let the dealer do it right.
