I have no manual however I have narrowed the problem down to the ignitor. It comes on and glows for 15 seconds and then it goes out. About 5 minutes later it repeats itself. how do I gain access to the...

Brett,
If the ignitor is coming on, it's working. Do not go there. Make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is turned on.
There are 2 things that can go wrong. Either the radiant sensor is bad or the gas valve solenoids have failed. More than likely the solenoids have failed. The part is 279834. You can change these parts without taking the gas valve apart.
To gain access to the solenoids, you need to disassemble the top panel and the front panel. To remove the top panel, you need to unclip the control panel first. Take a flat thin paint scraper and slide it between the left and right end caps of the control panel and the top panel. This will unclip the control panel from the top panel. Once unclipped, lift the control panel up and over. Remove the 3 screws holding the top panel and the 2 screws hold the filter screen. Pull the panel forward and remove.
Remove 2 screws holding the front panel. Remove the belt and drum. BE SURE TO OBSERVE HOW THE BELT IS MOUNTED BEFORE REMOVING SO IT WILL BE EASIER REINSTALL.
Hope this helps.

Cleaning the pump?

On the lower left of the machine is a access door to the pump. Open the door and remove the plug by turning it counterclockwise and remove the debris. If you need disassembly procedures to access the pump itself, please let me know.

No heating?

If the unit runs and heats for a short time, then only runs without heating, it may have bad gas coils(2 solenoids that are screwed on to top of gas valve)

If the unit runs without any heating would check the ignitor or the thermal fuse.(ignitor is fragile)

Check it is not accidentally set in air fluff....

Most all whirlpool dryers are front serviceable by lifting the top(two screws by air filter and putty knife pushing in about two inches on each side in front) Some have a lower front panel, most you remove the front to access parts. Sharp edges and unplug while servicing. The ignitor and thermal fuses can be ohmed out at a service store. There are other possibilities, these are the most common, good luck.

UNIT IS KENMORE M#417.94072300 UNIT WILL START

It's likely one of the coils is opening a break in the coil as the coil heats up. This coil will shrink when cool and be able to run again. The number for the coil kit, which will replace ALL the coils, for your machine is 5303931775.

Disconnect power and turn off gas before working on this dryer. Working on gas dryers is not recommended for people who are not professionals.

Service on gas appliances should be undertaken by professionals only due to the danger of gas leakage which can cause fires or death by asphyxiation.

The disassembly procedure is covered beginning on page 57 of the manual listed at the link below. Operation and replacement of coils is covered at page 68. Replace All coils with Kit Number listed above. Take care not to touch or hit the ignitor or you will be replacing it also. It is VERY brittle.

Reverse process to re-assemble. Good Luck

Click on the link and print out the manual below or refer to it. It should give you all you need to know to disassemble and repair the gas valve coils.

Dryer doesnt blow hot air.

I find that quite often the ignitor is out of alignment or the glass window is covered with lint.
a gas dryer blows air through a burner assembly to heat the air. The burner assembly consists essentially of a gas valve, ignitor and a flame sensor. If any part of the burner assembly malfunctions, the result will be low or no heat and slow drying of the clothes.
There are two common styles of ignitors, glow ignitors and spark ignitors. The ignitor ignites the gas either by heating up and glowing, or by sparking. If the ignitor fails, the dryer will not heat.

The easiest way to check the ignitor is to observe it. Remove the small access panel in front, select a high temperature setting and start the dryer. Watch the burner assembly, shortly after starting the dryer the ignitor should begin to glow or spark. If you see it glow or spark, then the ignitor is working.

Dryer runs but will not heat-vent and exhaust hoses appear clear.

Disconnect power from the dryer. Open the door and remove the 4 phillip screws from the inside lip of the door opening. Lift the door slightly and remove by sliding the hinge out from the slot on the cabinet. Grasp the front panel near the upper holes of the screw just removed. Twist from the inside out and pull away from the cabinet at the same time. Lift the front panel off of the bottom clips to gain access to the igniter. DO NOT touch the new ignitor surface as it is extremely fragile. The ignitor is attached by a single screw. Make sure the molex connector to new ignitor is secure.

Reverse the above procedure to reassemble.
