SOURCE: Picture Refresh Problem
Used Panasonic Concierge Chat and they had me do this:
press volume down on the TV (not the remote) and then press menu on the remote for 10-15 seconds to bring up a check screen. After that, unplugged TV for one minute. Plug TV back in and set up for Home. Can exit out of the rest of the set up. So far so good......this was happening only periodically for me, so we will have to see if it works. I was also having to go to TV Video and select Component 1 (cable for me) every time I turned on the TV, but the above action fixed that. Now it goes to the input that was on when the tv was last turned off. Concierge is free. Very cool.

SOURCE: keeps going to refresh mode
This is the Panasonic Customer Service Answer:
you need to reset the unit to get it out of store mode sir
make sure the unit is on and we are not in any menu screens
press and hold the volume down button on the front panel
and ok on the remote at the same time until the words self check appears on the front of the screen
once self check is displayed unplug the unit from the wall for one minute
after one minute plug the unit back in and it will go back through first time setup
make sure you pick the home mode

the problem is it is locked in store mode. I had to call panasonic to fix it, this is what they had me do.
1 hold the volume down on the tv while holding the menu button on the controller.
2 after the screen changes to the check menu, hold the off switch on the tv untill it turns off.
3 unplug the tv for 30 sec.
4 plug it back in and turn on the set.
5 select home option
6 your done.

The tv is on "store" rather than "home" setting. If the message "going to refresh mode" keeps appearing every 5-10 minutes, do the following:
-Unplug TV from wall and leave it for about a minute.
-Plug TV back in and follow "initial setup instructions" (can be found on page 14 of manual).
You will be given the choice of "home" or "store" settings. Change it from "store" to "home".

More than likely the TV is in the "retail" mode which intentionally reverts to the "vivid" mode after a short period of time on the other settings, deemed best for retailer display puposes.
Follow the "return to factory settings" instructions found in the operators manual, pg 21 of KDL52S5100. Only the first half of the instructions are needed to put the TV in "home" mode, the 2nd slection to make after "language. After you have slected "home" I do not beleiev you need to any go further into the setup menu.
"Turn the TV on. Press and hold the "^" (up arrow) button on the remote and then push the "Power" button on the TV. Release the "up" arrow."
You should now be back to start, select langauge and home mode and then exit.
You now should be good to go and your picture mode selections should now stay put.
Sony has live tech help "chat" and I would suggest using them if this doesn't get it done - but I'm 99.95% sure this is your fix.
