I was wondering if you have changed your phone company in the past 12 months ?.

possibly that but it realy sounds like your modem has gone west .

Unfortunately these units are so cheap now its not really worth the effort of a repair

economicaly , I have seen them on the internet for as litlle as $10 thats £5 in our money .

A repair is going to cost you quadruple that ?.

The tx and rx (transmission and recieving data) is not functioning. this is found on the inside of your machine. your analog circuit board is causing the problem that is why you wont really transmit and receive any data signal from the line. your analog circuit board needs fixing or replacing so that the digital circuit board will work then. telephone line is working in first in the analog board of your machine. try to dis attache the analog board the one that the telephone jack is inserted. and replace it.
hope this help you.

Digital line?. did just get ADSL? ( Phone internet?) if you did you need an ADSL filter for the telephone outlet. If you haven't changed any telephone service or provider and the line is static call your phone company it could be a short.

Does your digital line require you to use a "Signal Splitter" if so, are you using it? Have you got your Phone cord plugged into the correct socket at the rear? Just a thought.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Troubleshooting checklist
When your All-In-One has a problem, before contacting Lexmark Customer Support, check the following items:

Is the power supply firmly attached to your All-In-One and a properly functioning electrical outlet?
Are both your All-In-One and computer on?
Is your USB cable securely attached to your All-In-One and to your computer or Lexmark adapter?
Are any error messages displayed on the control panel? For help, see All-In-One displays error messages.
Did you remove the sticker and transparent tape from the back and bottom of both print cartridges?
Did you install the print cartridges correctly? For help, see Replacing the print cartridges.
Is the paper loaded correctly? Make sure you do not push the paper too far into the All-In-One. For help, see Loading plain paper into the paper support.
Is your operating system compatible with your All-In-One? The Lexmark 4200 Series supports these operating systems:
    Windows 98
    Windows Me
    Windows 2000
    Windows XP
Did you install the All-In-One software correctly?
From your desktop, click Start Programs or All Programs.

If Lexmark 4200 Series does not appear in your list of programs, install the All-In-One software.

Is the All-In-One set as the default printer?
To set the All-In-One to be the default printer:

    Click Start Settings Printers.
Right-click the Lexmark 4200 Series and make sure that Set as Default is selected.
If you are using your All-In-One with your computer, is your All-In-One connected directly to your computer? If it is connected through an external device, such as a USB hub or switch box, follow these steps:
Disconnect your All-In-One from any external devices.
Connect your All-In-One directly to your computer with a USB cable.
Follow these instructions to print a test page.
Open the Lexmark Solution Center. For help, see Using the Lexmark Solution Center.
From the Maintenance tab, click Print a Test Page.
If the test page prints, the problem may be with your external devices, not your All-In-One. Check the documentation that came with your external devices for help.
If the test page does not print, refer to the All-In-One software Help for further troubleshooting information.

Make sure the paper guide rests against the left edge of the paper and does not cause the paper to bow in the paper support.

Place the All-In-One on a flat, level surface.
Select the correct paper type and size. For help, see Choosing the paper type and size.

You can lighten or darken your document from the control panel.

On the control panel, press Lighter/Darker.
Press the right arrow to darken your document or the left arrow to lighten it.
When the asterisk (*) on the display moves to a satisfactory position, press Select.
Vertical, straight lines are not smooth
To improve the print quality of vertical, straight lines in tables, borders, and graphs:

Test the cartridge alignment. For help, see Aligning the print cartridges.

Let the ink dry before handling the paper.
Select the correct paper type and size in Properties, Preferences, or from the All-In-One Center.
Make sure the paper is straight and unwrinkled.
Select the appropriate quality for the paper type. If you are printing on inkjet paper, select Quick Copy from the Quality/Copies tab of Properties, Preferences, Options, Setup or from the All-In-One Center.
Clean the cartridge nozzles. For help, see Cleaning the print nozzles.

Fax problem

I want to make sure I understand this completely. You get no dial tone from the fax machine when hooked up to VOIP. In the past, was there an audible dial tone from the fax, or did it just dial silently and give you an error if there was no tone? When you said you got a dial tone by connecting a phone to the ext phone port of "the machine" did you mean the fax machine? If you get a dial tone by running a phone through the fax machine, then the line is good. I have used a fax machine over Sunrocket before they went defunct, which used the same technology base as Vonage - so it should work. If you used to get an audible dial tone when using the fax, and no longer do, and you are geting a dial tone on a regular phone that is connected to the ext. port of the fax machine, then the problem has to be in the fax machine itself, not the VOIP. If you can verify that, we can go from there.

We cannot receive or send a fax. If I dial our fax number it rings as a normal phone and not the sound that a fax number makes. The machine is only a few months old.

Not sure how a fax machine is supposed to sound when it rings, before the fax answers it will sound exactly the same on the phone as dialing a regular phone number. If you are using distinct ring tone service where the fax line is supposed to double ring and it is not then it is possible that your phone provider has problems. Are you able to make a regular voice call on the phone line that the fax is supposed to use? If no, then it is definetly the line not the machine.

Fax machine at work was working then all of a sudden, we did not have a dial tone, just static! What to do? Thanks, dl please respond to tapdancerdl@yahoo.com

Plug a regular phone into the fax line..unplug the fax mchine...if you still only have static then you have a problem with the fax line and should report it to your phone provider...if you do have dial tone on the telepnone but not off the fax's phone then you have a prob with your fax machine.

Fax wont' go through. Plugged phone jack into phone line and when I try to fax it doesn't connect. Any suggestions? Thanks

Can you receive any faxes. Run a Fax Test from the Tools menu. Is the problem with only one fax receipient? (Check the phone number and make sure they are set to receive. I have dealt with one fax receipient where the call-waiting service caught the fax call.)

Does the Fax see a dial tone? If there is no dial tone, use a single line phone (corded) to listen for a dial tone at that jack. If there is no dial tone, check the incoming service for a dial tone. (If you have no dial tone at all, contact your service provider.) Try a new phone cable (2-wire RJ-11) Try calling the number from another phone line with the single line phone attached. If the phone doesn't ring with a new cable, check your wiring and then contact your provider. Is the signal analog or digital (the all-in-one is designed for digital)?

Go back through the fax settings and set it as directed in Step 2 here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01458259&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3643612 . You need the fax error reporting setting.

Disconnect any items that are plugged into the 2-Ext port.

Try reinitializing the unit. Unplug the power cord with the unit on. Make sure that the phone cord is fully seated in the 1-Line port. Then reconnect the power cord.

Try resetting the all-in-one, this may require 2 people. With the printer on, unplug the power cord and wait at least 20 seconds. Press and hold # and 3 while plugging in the power cord. Release the buttons after the unit starts up.

If none of these steps help the unit may need service.

Trouble with the fax function

There is no setting to make this work, sorry.

This is just the nature of digital phone service. Some fax machines will work, and some won't, but generally the extremely high priced units are the one that will work (of course, right?)

It all has to do with the way the fax machine "hears" the ring, or detects the dial tone.

The only other option is to use the HP as a scanner, and send the faxes through the internet using a 3rd party fax program.

I know this is a pain, but unless you want to shell out big bucks for a new fax machine, it may be the only answer.

Replace Drum

Start by trying this.
NOTE: Perform the following procedure to reset the Drum Cartridge counter after you replace the Drum Cartridge. Do not perform this procedure at any other time.
  1. From the Standby Mode, press the [Menu] (up arrow) button, then press [5], [2], [0], [4]. The screen will display: Change drum.
    1. Yes
    2. No
  2. Press [1], then press [Enter]. The screen will display: Completed.
  3. Press [Stop] to return to the Standby Mode.
If that doesn't work try this. You may not be able to perform step 1 but that's ok.
