sounds like the choke mechanism is stuck in closed position, causing a overly rich mixture, to check this removethe air filter cover, element and housing, there are two nuts and a 5/16 head screw somewhere that need to come off too, then pull off housing and you will be able to see the choke plate, it should only be closed when throttle lever is all the way up. when you determine if this is the pronlem or not you can email me if you want

Check everything is clean. Check the air filter is clean, check that the engine cooling fan, cutting blades and cutting deck are free of grass. Check all the drive belt pulleys to ensure accumulated grass is not jamming anything. Check the fuel filler cap is clean and the breather hole works.

Engine dies when when you engage mower or gear

First I would check that the air filter is not stopped up. Second I would clean the carb very well as I believe the high speed circuit in your carb is obstructed. The mower will idle on the low speed circuit but I think it is getting insufficient fuel when you load it. This is where the high speed circuit comes in to allow the additional fuel for higher demand operations like moving in gear and especially the blades.

I hope that this helps.

Try this.
When the machine begins to stall, immediately loosen the gas cap.
If this works, drill out the vent holes on the cap.
Please post back to let me know if this works.

Craftsman 42 in. deck lawn tractor. Will start and idle fine but when you let out on the clutch the motor bogs down and dies

few reasons will try to narrow down first start it and put in neutral and deck disengaged release clutch if bogs then fuel problem the carb may need adjustment or repair or fuel filter needs replacement----if no bog step on clutch no put in gear release clutch if bogs check drive belt -upper belt on engine pulley and check for binding an idler pulley problem -debris -or rear unit binding -needs service-drive pulley damaged-rear locked--if not bogging in gear step on clutch engage deck release clutch if bogs need to check deck -belts-pulleys -mandrels -bearings and for bent or binding blades good luck
