Question about Toshiba TP50G90 50" Rear Projection Television

Toshiba TN55X81 Projection HDTV

I'm in desperate need of some good advice. My picture went out on my Toshiba. It's just a sad black screen. When the power is one,there is this pounding vibrating noise eminating from the tv. Can you help me? Thanks, DW

Your Rear Projection LAMP has been expired , get it replaced with new one .

Have you opened it upto see if there is any illumination from the projector need more info.....

What powers the picture tubes in a 55 inch model tn55x81

The tubes in the projection set among other things need: 200 volt screen source, filament voltage and high voltage.

Note that if set for example has a loss of vertical or horizontal sweep this will be detected and the tubes will be shut off to prevent the tubes from getting a burn mark on their screens.

Projection TV2_bing.gif sets have several common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence


  • Screen Looks 3D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted
  • No Audio/Video - TV2_bing.gif makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2 CRT Fluid has clouded over. Symtoms
  • Dull looking video
  • White looking video
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking video

My toshiba rear projection TV's picture just went black. Sound is good just a black screen.

high voltage is not coming up. possible fuse locates on power supply board on the right if you are sitting behind set with back off. if fuses are good, possible horizontal output transistor shorted. sounds horrible but easy repair

It shouldn't be the convergence chips. You may have blown a pico fuse on the power board.
You should be able to safely remove the convergence IC's and try the tv without them as they only do image correction.

my thought is that it's something with the closed captioning, fiddle with those settings in the menu, or with the devices like VCR or DVD if you're using something like that as a tuner.
