Question about Ariens 21 In Classic Walk Behind Push Lawn Mower ()

My mower will only start when i prime the carb and then cut out once dat small bit of fuel is burnt off, its a carb with a float and no choke, tink it could be anautomatic one

Hi paul
Here are a few suggestions for you to check
I think it sounds like you have dirt/debris in your caburetor jets,fuel passages or a diaphgram that is becoming non-flexible.
Check/Clean/Replace your Air Filter, a dirty air filter can make your engine run to rich with fuel.
Note: ALWAYS USE COMPRESSED AIR TO CLEAN YOUR JETS AND PASSAGES, VERY IMPORTANT.
Note:Before you disassemble the carburetor:
Write down on a piece of paper and or take a picture of how the linkage attaches to your carburetor for later reference when you go to reinstall your carburetor.
Mark each piece with a awl, or some kind of sharp instrument that will make an alignment scratch before you disassemble the carburetor into separate pieces.
That way you will know which way it goes back together when you reassemble it.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or by using a very small shot of starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that, and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris then you need to clean your tank.
Check you fuel line/s condition...after a while they will degrade and need replacement.
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one.
When you remove your fuel lines from the carburetor be sure to make a drawing or take a picture of how the lines are connected to the carburetor.
Also a good time to take a picture for later reference for reassembly.
If the mower is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
The diaphgram may look good and flexible, but it can be deceiving and not act as a fuel pump as it should because it has become too hard and will cause hard starting,start and run and shut off, etc.
When you clean your carburetor, I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use COMPRESSED AIR to blow out all the fuel and air passages.The higher air pressure is needed to blow some of the trash/debris from the fuel or air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit, or you could also ask the parts man that you get your kit from.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their original position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor cleaned/rebuilt that should solve your problem.

Follow gas line from tank to carb. Observe bottom of carb. Remove screw holding carb bowl to carb. Clean bowl. Pinch off gas line with pliers. Ensure float falls down easily. Float up no fuel flow, float down fuel flow. Observe screw that hold carb bowl to carb, see if it has a whole thru it, clean with small wire, bread wrapper works good. Observe center fuel port, clean with wire. Remove pin that holds float and meter needle, clean port with wire. Reassemble. Ensure air filter is clean, oil is full, 30w oil, spark plug is clean and properly gapped. Replace air filter and spark plug once a year. Empty old oil out if any grey is observed in oil, this is moisture, can accumulate after winter storage. Clean out side of carb with carb cleaner to ensure choke can rotate freely. Always use Stabile in gas.
All newer mowers have a low oil shutoff.

I have twin 135 hp Yamaha outboard engines. Neither engine will start when cold.Putting small amount of gas into air intake and engine starts, engine starts fine when hot. Choke solenoid working


just like a car before the car start the fuel pump shoots gas in the carb or a lawnmower you gotta prime it all the gas that was in the carbs when you shut them motors off has done evaporated check your fuel cells see if there is a hand pump to prime the carbs unless its electric fuel pumps either way them carbs have to be primed

Automatic governor speed control, no adjustment. Remove & clean spark plug. Remove air cleaner, replace filter if dirty. Check oil level. Remove float bowl from bottom of carb. ensure float hangs freely and gas flows. Push up on float, gas should stop. Remove pin holding float in mount, remove float and meter needle. Clean meter needle passage with small wire. Replace float and meter needle as require. Observe float bowl screw, see if a hole is present thru screw near head, clean with wire. Reassemble. prime, pull rope 4 times 1/2 way. Pull rope up to 10 times to start. ensure fresh gas. Always use Stabile in gas. Spray outside of carb with carb cleaner to ensure choke is free to operate where cable is attached.

Hi, my name is Shaun. I will do my best to help you with your problem. By your description, it wounds like you are not getting any fuel to your carbuerator. This may be caused by sticking floats or a clogged needle valve. Try this. First, make sure your gas line is clamped shut or your tank is empty. Then remove the float bowl from the bottom of your carb. This will reveal the floats. Make sure they move absolutely freely. If you look closely, you will see that the floats pivot on a steel pin. Remove this pin to free the floats from the carb. Be careful to pay very close attention to how these parts go back together, especially where the needle valve is located. When you pull out this pin, the needle valve will come free along with the floats. Give the pin, float hinges, and needle valve a good scrubbing with some carb cleaner and a toothbrush. then use the straw attachment to shoot some cleaner up into the hole where the tip of the needle valve was located. Be careful, as there is a rubber gasket up inside there. Then disconnect your fuel line from the carb and shoot some cleaner in there. Reassemble averything except for the float bowl and put a little bit of gas in the tank. Observe the fuel flow from the needle valve. You should have a good, steady stream. Lift up on the floats and make sure the flow stops. If all of this checks out, reinstall the float bowl and give it a few minutes to fill up. Then prime and start your engine as normal. This should clear up your problem and keep you mowing for another season. Hope this helps. Good luck and have a great day!

Clean the carb bowl out. Check for water in fuel. While the carb is open check the float for obstructions and good volume of flow.
Make sure the float height is within spec. You will need to go the BS website and get this spec with your motors model and serial number. Normally floats are good when they sit level at the point the fuel stops flowing.

I have a Sears craftsman lawn mower that will not stay running. The model # in the engine is 12h887-2314-E1. Can you give any suggestion?

There are 3 different carb variations on this unit.

Primer type
Choke type
Auto-choke type?

On the Primer type with the plunger on the side of the carb the primer bulb gets a pin hole in it that allows air to be drawn through the primer bulb. So the engine will start an then die after priming.

On the Choke type carb debris in the bottom of the float bowl AND bowl nut will cause this.

On the Auto Choke type there is a diaphram under the carb that can get damaged and allow airflow where there should be fuel flow.

I am pretty sure that your mower has the float bowl on it. remove the bowl nut... take some carb cleaner and spray directly up into the hole the bowl nut screws into and clean it. Then also spray around the float needle.

If your still having problems.. just fro grins remove the fuel supply line to the carb and check for fuel flow. If there is little or no flow either the fuel slector is off or the fuel tank outlet has debris covering the tank outlet hole inside the gas tank.

Starts but wont keep running


The fuel bowl has a float and needle, the bowl is filled with gas and over time the float gets filled with gas or just don't float as it should within the bowl. the needle is pulled up by the float which lets fuel flow into the carb. A repair kit can be bought for $5 and is easily replaced. After you take this apart, it's a good idea to clean the carb with a carb cleaner. You'll have to take off quiet a bit which looks difficult but it's really not.

the problem is in your carb.,at the bottem of the carb. there is a bolt that threads in to the carb.pinch off the fuel line so that no fuel comes out after the fuel bowl is off the mower.now look into the bolt that you took off.there should be a hole oppisit the head of the bolt.there are also two holes that go through the sides.these holes are the fuel intake to the carb,the hole in the center is the fuel nozzle.most likely you have dirt blocking this hole and not letting the motor get enough fuel to run.thake some carb cleaner and spray it in the hole.take an air hose then blow the nozzle out.while you have the screw out take the bowl off and check to see if there is any water or dirt in the bowl.after cleaning.reinstall the bowl and start mower again.should be running ok now.if not let me know and i'll guide you through another fix.let me know if this helped or not................

I have Sears Craftsman riding mower and it will run for about 15 minutes and then starts choking out and will cut off. I have replaced the fuel filter and had carb cleaned. Still having the same...


If the carb was torn down and completely cleaned and you think that it is chocking out I would think the that the float level is to high. Drop the level of the float down a bit and try it again. I hope this will be of some help to you. Good luck, Donnyb60
