SOURCE: spark plug gap

All these engines have a magneto ignition. The faster the mag spins the higher (better) the sparkplug voltage. So the gap is only set for the ease of starting and is not a huge part of tunning as it is on a car. Try .020 inches.

Hi Jesse:
SPARK PLUG AIR GAP ON ALL MODELS IS
.030 (.762MM)
NOTE:
Not all spark plugs have the same heat range or reach. Using an incorrect spark plug can cause severe engine damage or poor performance. Tecumseh uses all three of the reaches shown.

How do you set the gap between the coil and the flywheel

Usually you loosen the coil and it'll move in or out a little bit. Use feeler gauge on both sides of the coil. Afterwards slowly turn engine over to ensure nothing is hitting

What is the proper gap of a spark plug on a 28 graham brothers truck

Depends. It depends upon which engine (Dodge six? Dodge eight?) the truck has. It depends upon how much compression the engine has, and upon how strong the coil is. A good starting point would be around 0.035". If that gap results in a persistent miss, especially at higher engine speeds, try 0.005" more or less - if the miss gets worse, go the other way. When the plugs fire consistently at all speeds, your gap is "correct".

8HP Tecumseh with no spark

Check the gap between the coil and the flywheel. You can fold a dollar bill over a few times (3 or 4 layers thick) , place it against the flywheel , **** the coil up to it , and then tighten down the coil. This will give you a good clearance between the coil and flywheel and promote good spark.

Essentially I am suggesting you use the folded dollar bill to set the coil to flywheel distance/gap.

If it still doesn't work, I am at a loss. Is this a multi cylinder engine ? If so , does it have points or electronic ignition ?

Engine does not start. Starter & solenoid work fine. Checked air filter, fuel filter, fuel level, level in choke position. Plug is kind of flooded. Increased plug gap slightly. There is no spark....

Most small engines use a flywheel with a magnet embedded in it and an ignition coil with a core that sits a few thousandths away from the flywheel. Ignition coils are common failures probably because they come from our wonderful Chinese friends. They have demolished all US manufacturers. If you replace the coil, use some gauge to measure the gap between coil core and the flywheel magnet surface before removing the old coil. Otherwise you may spend a little time using trial & error to get the engine running again.
If your engine is a Briggs and Stratton, you can find very complete maintenance downloadable information on their website. This will pertain to the engine only, not the mower.
Dunno about Tecumseh, haven't had much need for service info on those.

No spark

Hi
You need a special tester to test a coil off of the engine. If you take iit to a small engine shop they can test it for you. You can test it on the engine. First clean the surface of the coil where it mounts to the engine. Reinstall the coil. Do not install the kill wire to the coil. Install a inline spark tester and crank engine if you still don't have any spark the coil is bad.

Tecumseh engine wont run right

Znj_akes:

Has this engine been inactive for a long time?? If it has, mMaybe the carb is gummed up.

Any chance the position of the magneto has changed? A second thing you might check (especially considering this is a 1960's vintage) is the gap between the mag coil and the actual magnet is fouled with dirt/rust. That gap is usually about the thickness of a dollar bill.I have used fine sand paper in that gap to clean it,

Hope this might help Loringh
