Laptop power LED switches on but switches off again

Greetings I have a Compaq 610 laptop here that I really love, but now its not working. What basically happened, I was busy typing a Word document, left to go make some coffee, and when I came back, it was shut down. Thought maybe its in sleep mode or so. I try switching it on, the power LED just lightsup for a few seconds and then switches off. I also see the Battery LED light is blue, but when I switch it on, it flashes orange, then turn white and then switches off and then turns blue again. I've been reading around here for solutions, but the "removing battery and AC adapter and press power button for 30 seconds" are not really helpful. Any ideas?

Yes, but it involves board level component replacement....

An example of what I believe the problem may be, and using the HP Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's;

Compaq 615 Notebook PC and Compaq 610 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide

Wear an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.

Or replace motherboard at a $100 on up.
(NOT including labor. Just price of motherboard)

Or it may be something as simple as the laptop is dirty inside, plus the Thermal Paste on the Processor has dried up; and Thermal Pad on graphics chipset has dried up. (Cannot be reused anyway)

    I did clean it. Saw the fan was full of dust. So I cleaed the fan and the rest of the motherboard, but it still does the same. Altough this time, the Power button flashes and the wireless button flashes, and then switches off. Very weird. Any ideas perhaps? I am considering someone to do board level repair, but just to save a buck, I would like to find out if it might be something else...

    I found out something rather weird now. Whenever I disassemble the laptop completely and test the motherboard, it works 100% fine. I even added the HDD, RAM and Wireless card just to make sure, it still works fine. It might be some kind of improper grounding or the fan got too much pressure on it or something like that, but I'll keep checking...

Try holding the power button down for at least 10 seconds, that should turn off the laptop completely. Then press the power button again to turn it on. Hopefully it will boot up.

The power button may not work, that is most common in laptops, or you have a short.

Compaq 610 laptop will not power up, any fix?

Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED lightup? If not then -The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty.Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a drysolder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Hi .i have hp compaq 610 in build speakers not can solve the problem.please help me.

The inbuilt speakers on my laptop do not work. I believe the headphone input socket to be the problem because when i stick my headphones in it only works if i squeeze the laptop near the socket. The input has been quite heavily used so i'm quite certain its broken somehow. Anyway, my layman theorising has led me to the conlcusion that my laptop thinks that headphones are plugged in when they're not and so disables the speaker so maybe if i could disable the headphone input the speakers might work. I'm sorry if this sounds confusing but my computer knowledge is really, really limited. Any help would be massively appreciated. thanks

An intermittent problem is hard for a pro with the right tools to resolve so take that into account. I would suspect (in no particular order) the power switch, the laptop power socket and distribution, the A/C adaptor, battery and the other circuitry inside the laptop which usually means a new mainboard. There are a couple of things we can try that doesn't require taking anything apart: -Are you sure the A/C adaptor is really working despite the LED being on? The surest way is to try it on another similar laptop if you have access to one. Another is to see if the battery is fully charged, most batteries have a LED charge device incorporated into the battery you can use to determine that. -Remove the main battery and try running just with the A/C adaptor. Batteries these days are more than just a bunch of batteries wired together. They monitor and communicate with the system; in some cases they can prevent a startup. Going beyond this point means taking the laptop apart. This is generally not a simple thing and requires skill, patience, tools, lots of time and the ability to risk damaging the laptop beyond economic repair. If we open it up and don?t see anything obvious then the troubleshooting process will require obtaining new, working parts to switch out. Overall you will have to make a substantial investment which many or may not pay off the end. I typically recommend that users who do not have experience working on delicate electronics serious laptop issues to their local authorized repair shop. They have the experience, tools and parts which generally translates into getting a working laptop back at minimal expense. If the two previous suggests don?t work and you?ve decided you want to continue troubleshooting (and opening up) the laptop let us know and we can give you some general instructions how to open it up and where to get parts. Good luck and please don?t? forget to rate this posting.
