This model laptop came with a 60Gb hard drive and it will work with a 40Gb hard drive.
If it was me I would install a 60 Gb hard drive not a smaller one.

SOURCE: I want to upgrade my Compaq Presario 1200 AMD laptop Hard Drive - any limitations?

any IDE will fit, BUT there are at least two different IDE types. Parallel ATA (PATA), and Serial ATA (SATA). findout whether or not your laptop HDD is pata or sata, and then you can try looking at www.newegg.com and they will have good prices on new laptop hard drives. try looking for a 4200rpm or faster.

SOURCE: hard drive problem

I've been wrestling with tw IBM's with similar issues for the last three days, one of which wouldn't recognize the hard drive or the CD drive. I'm going to suggest flashing the bios, this worked on the ones I have. Here's a link to the bios download. I recommend that you use the one for creating a diskette. Try this and let me know.

XP install is not detecting any hard disk.
No jumpers are required for laptops, can only have one hard drive in a laptop.
Check the BIOS for the hard disk configuration, make sure that it is set on Auto (detect).
You may have a faulty hard disk, you can check it by booting up with a floppy DOS boot disk, run fdisk to see if it detects the hard disk, OR connect this hard drive to a USB hard disk adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port and if it detects it as an external drive the it is OK.

My DELL N5010 laptop has hd error message and i cannot open it

HD is stuck or bad or it lost its boot mgr. Try unplugging it removing the battery and wait about 5 minutes replace battery and restart the laptop again. If that does not work you may need to try to re-install the Operating System again if that does not work, "GET ANOTHER HD REPLACEMENT" that ought to do it for you. John

My dell 1525 hard drive does not seem to seat properly, "snap" into place. Computer is not detecting the hard drive. USB hard drive works.

make sure your HDD has the interface ( the connection that goes from inside laptop to the HD on its place but if you have another HDD that you can put or "snap" into place then you'll know if your HD is working properly.

External HD is not detected by laptop Windows XP

A common issue...I'm sure your hard drive is working fine, Windows is just not giving it an unused drive letter.

1. Insert the device (camera or usb drive)
2. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage".
3. Click on "Disk Management"
4. Right-click the item in the list that looks like your camera or usb drive, and then click "Change Drive Letter and Paths."
5. Click "Change".
6. Give it a drive letter that is not being used.
7. Click OK.

The device should work instantly after that.

Having problems upgrading my laptop hard drive !!!

From what I gather basically you want to copy everything off of your 40GB and put it on the new 320GB and the install correct? Why don't you do a backup (Start>All programs>System Tools>Backup to the external 500GB drive. Install the new 320GB drive and then load the operating system from your operating system disc, then restore the data from the 500GB you backed up, or am I missing something.I know it is not as convenient as cloning but sounds like you may need to do it the old fashion way..there is no good reason that the cloning software would quit reading your disc unless it's some kind of "only get one chance and throw away software".

Selecting a replacement hard drive for Dell Inspiron 8500

pull out the hard drive and look on it see if it's an ATA or SATA
the brand does not matter, just the connection type I stated.

best place is here

Also, go to DELL.COM and support, type in your tag# and look for your system specs, it will tell you there what kind ok HD it has BUT best way is to pull HD out and look at the label.

this is a very simple job to do. just take your time.
